The Wood Lathe 201 - Bowl Turning class will teach the skills you need to transform a piece of firewood into a beautiful and functional work of art - a hand-turned wooden bowl.
Topics covered include:
Bowl Design Fundamentals
Use of Specialized Tools
Types of Cuts (Push, Pull, Scrape, Shear Scrape)
(Mounting Blanks, Setting Speed of Lathe, Setting Height of
Toolrest, Shaping Exterior, Turning a Tenon, Remounting in a
Chuck, Shaping Interior, Measuring Thickness and Depth,
Cutting Rim, Sanding, Finishing, and Final Shaping of Foot)
Up to 30 minutes of discussion will be followed by a series of demonstration of bowl-turning techniques. After each demonstration you will have 20 to 30 minutes to practice these techniques under the instructor's guidance. As always, students are expected to clean up shavings and put away all tooling when they are done. Bowl blanks will be provided.
Please note that this is *not* a lathe sign off class. The class has a prerequisite of Lathe 101 and 5 hours of *recent* spindle turning practice.
Nova Labs Green Orientation (GO!)
Lathe Safety 101
Five hours of turning in the last 3 months
This class will be a pre-requisite for more advanced turning classes, such as Turning Natural Edge Bowls or Turning Hollowforms.
