go on artistic activist retreat

  • Feb 9, 2013 · 12:00 PM

The Connection Action Project, a grassroots initiative to bring NVC to the streets of the SF East Bay, is applying for a special grant to build on the successes of the Deep Listening Post and I invite you to participate with us. If we get the grant, 10-12 of us would come together for a Creative Activists workshop one weekend sometime between April and August of 2013.

The workshop will take place at a retreat center within two hours of here. All expenses would be paid for. The workshop would be intensive, productive and creative and the expectation is that we will apply what we learn towards a creative action project in the following month.

The grantmakers, the School for Creative Activism, is a project of two highly respected artist-activists situated on the East Coast who receive support from the Open Societies Foundation's Democracy and Power Fund. For more information about the grant, see http://artisticactivism.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/2013-SCA-application.pdf

Our grant application is focused on bringing Connection Action support into the Bay Area in a new way. Yesterday Judith Kitty picked up a 1979 Chevy G20 van-- loaned indefinitely to us by a CAP supporter. The grant will give us an opportunity to explore the van's usage and messaging and also use help us to design the look of our apparel, as well as creative materials for promoting our vision. We hope to use this wonderful resource to co-create a world of stronger interpersonal connections, where people share their realities and find ways to ground our economic, cultural, and political systems in caring, humanitarian ideals. Training with the the School for Creative Activism can help us develop a cohesive, effective campaign.
We invite your participation in this project. If you're interested, please a bio of no longer than one paragraph to [masked] by 12:00 noon this Saturday, Feb. 9. I think it will help our application to highlight any

Artistic background and skills,
Political organizing experience
Leadership positions you currently hold
Experience with the Connection Action Project.

Thanks for reading this. I look forward to hearing back from you and please let me know if you have any questions.

Yours,
Judith Kitty

Sounds great. I'd like to know if/when/where this gets organized.

I'm skimming the linked pages -- not quite clear on what is going on here. What is the desired outcome of this retreat? Is it a process or a product? An NVC van with an image and costumes that support outreach? Venues -- the youth hostels around the bay are fabulous. Pigeon Point's the only one I've personally used -- but very modest in price. This weekend is shot for me but more details are welcome.

Not sure whether your fourth sentence above is a question or an expression of skepticism -- let me know. And thanks for the suggestions about venues! If we get the grant, we'll have $4000 for accommodations and food, so we can look into resorts -- not need to "resort" to a hostel!

I totally support the outcome, Judith! Fourth sentence referred to your "The grant will give us an opportunity to explore the van's usage and messaging and also use help us to design the look of our apparel, as well as creative materials for promoting our vision." This, and NVC outreach with the "listening post" , made me wonder if you might be considering some image/identity that would support the outreach. I wanted to be sure I understood before I passed information along to anyone else. I know a couple of skilled costumers and art car people with strong nonviolent principles who might want to help with a specific project, but from your reply, it sounds like the retreat is more designed for community building with an ongoing group.

so I just got clear that there is no actual meeting tomorrow at noon but rather you are only asking for interest and possibly a bio of relevant experience. Is this correct?
