where does the trail start? I would like to meet there as I come from Brunswick MD

    • Teresa

We are starting at the Pinnacles Picnic Area, approximately milepost 37. You cannot miss the sign for it. Turn right into the picnic area and we will be in the first spaces on the right. I would suggest stopping to use the restroom before you get into the park or at the Panorama rest area just inside the park as you go south on Skyline Drive from the Thornton Gap entrance on 211.

Dogs are welcome on this hike! They need to be on a leash (not retractable!). Please carry water for your dog and bags to clean up after. :)

Teresa: missed Ashley's hike where I was going to bring Lincoln. I will bring him this time but, of course, will have him on a leash. Are you bringing your Mastiff?

Apparently there are several legends how Mary's Rock got it's name...this is one of them: Francis Thornton (local settler) had a daughter named Mary, who climbed up the mountain when she was young and came back with a bear cub under her arm...hence be vigilant for descendets of Mary's cub roam near Mary's Rock!

According to the book "Appalachian Trail Names" Mary Taliferro (pronounced Toliver)was the wife of Francis Thornton a wealthy 18th century landowner. He was said to have proposed to her here.

We scouted this hike yesterday. There are some significant climbs with areas that are rocky and leaf covered. We saw a mother bear and cubs near the AT shelter. Pace of the hike will be approximately 2.5 miles per hour.

Wendy, I was also on that Sky Meadow hike, and had to stop and catch my breath on the climbs, which weren't very long. So this Pinancle - Mary's Rock hike will definitely be too much for me. If you want an easier hike, I'm doing the Turkey Run hike (rated C) that same day.

Hey Teresa! Well I made it to the end, but the elevation was bit tough for me. I am still on the waiting list so I will think about it. Thanks!

Hi Mike! Yes, I remember that :) We both were out of breath during that elevation segment (but I saw that you kept going so it motivated me to keep going). Thanks for the tip! I will sign up Turkey Run and see which one to go (I will still on the waiting list for this one anyway). Thanks!

Hi everyone, I have moved the start time to 7:30 due to a conflict with another hiking club who is doing this same hike that day. Please be at Centreville by 7:15 to leave promptly at 7:30. If you are meeting at the trailhead, please be there by 8:45. If this affects your ability to attend, please change your rsvp to no. Sorry about this. They posted their hike yesterday and it completely corresponds to what we have planned. If we stagger the start times, hopefully we will not be crowding each other on this trail.
