Read and Discuss"How to Change your Mind," by Michael Pollan
HOW TO CHANGE YOUR MIND; The New Science of Psychedelics, by Michael Pollan. When LSD was first discovered in the 1940s, it seemed to researchers, scientists and doctors as if the world might be on the cusp of psychological revolution. It promised to shed light on the deep mysteries of consciousness, as well as offer relief to addicts and the mentally ill. But in the 1960s, with the vicious backlash against the counter-culture, all further research was banned. In recent years, however, work has quietly begun again on the amazing potential of LSD, psilocybin and DMT. Could these drugs in fact improve the lives of many people? Diving deep into this extraordinary world and putting himself forward as a guinea-pig, Michael Pollan has written a remarkable history of psychedelics and a compelling portrait of the new generation of scientists fascinated by the implications of these drugs. How to Change Your Mind is a report from what could very well be the future of human consciousness. This is new territory by this author. Previously, enjoyed his lively writing style and explorations on food in a previous meeting, so we are looking forward to his newest work. There is a $1.00 charge for each attendee in order to defray Meetup charges to the group.

What we're about

We will read and discuss books by winners of National and International book awards. The group will choose the books to read from current and past short-listed books and prize-winners AND the favorites of group members; these often can be found at the Library, and if you have an e-reader you won't have to buy anything. We MUST have nibbles while we deconstruct the author's meaning, message, and voice, so we should meet afternoon or evening at a place that provides these. Let's start at the Flying Star, Corrales Rd and Alameda. I want people who love to read - and who are willing to read things that challenge. I need to meet you! I retired here from Colorado and I need the company of mentally stimulating people. NO age limits. ALL welcome. You will find articulate, intelligent people at our table.

We will be constructing a syllabus of books for 2017: 12 wonderful books chosen from among the best of the English language - and an occasional translation! Bring YOUR suggestions to a meeting.
