Russ Joley trail and a Mystery hike.

Were going to do a favorite of mine and this is one of the hardest hikes in the Gorge! The date may have to change due to weather conditions. I hope we can do it this time.

Both are Lost hikes so most have never heard of them. One is a Mystery that took me a few months to find out about let alone do. The other is the Russ Joley hike that has historic value to it. He was sort of a famous trail maker.

I have never done one of them from up to down, we will this time. There are 3-4 rappelling places that we can either walk around ,belay or rappel down from. Its going to be steep and possibly muddy in places where we use roots and trees to descend.

Distance 6-8 miles

Very Difficult, you must bring a harness, locking beaner and  something for a prusik. A helmet couldn't hurt but I will let that slide by.

I will bring the rope.

If you have problems with heights, exposure , mud and using your hands this is not the hike for you.

I have seen reports where this takes up to 8-10 hours. I have always gone up and it usually takes about 6 hours. But then we only had to use the rope once and Andee doesn't need it at all. Its wet out now so for safety we will be more cautious where we need to be.

Last thing, I am not a climber so I don't know much about climbing but I think I can get you through the day. Sounds ominous.

This hike was scrambling at it's best. Thanks to Rick and the Team (and, of course, Mom Nature) for an amazing day!

Rick and Andee did such an excellent job hosting this hike. It was a hard hike as described, but the feeling of accomplishment felt so good (at the end!). The hike seemed to be about testing your willpower as almost everybody had their own challenge at some point during the down portion of the hike. It was good to see everybody work through their challenge. We did it!

Easily the best hike I've ever been on. Superb weather, awesome group, terrific views spiced up with near-death experiences :P Special thanks to Andee for guiding through the most difficult spots and possessing super-powers! And of course to Rick for being a fearless leader :)

I don't know what the 'sling' is that you mentioned in the email, but I have harness, helmet, crappy beaner (that gets stuck sometime, but will do for this trip), prusik, good spirit, and a relatively healed up arm. So it should be fine I think.

@Rick - I sent emails to two experienced Mazamas (David and Sheri) to see if they wanted to come along.

Greetings Rick - No problem - I will bring my 30m half-rope. Good to hear you are well enough to hike!

    March 29, 2013

  • Rick L. J.

Thanks All, I plan on going even if you all have to pull me up the hill. LOL! Hikers, I would allow one more to go if you send a email. @Craig, bring your rope to. I may be getting a full rope this weekend but not positive.

Greetings Rick and others - I got the email from Rick and how he is a little bit under the weather. My preference would be to hike only if Rick is 100% (option #3 in his email). If not, then I would be totally fine with moving it to another Sunday (if Sundays work for others). I feel Rick owns the hike, being the host and all, and it is up to him to decide what is best for himself and the group. Just my 2 cents.

I am unsure if I can make the new date (3/30) on the Russ Jolley/Mystery hike as I have other commitments. Therefore, I am iffy. I do have 3/31 open as an FYI.

bummer, I didn't see this one listed.

Its possible to go around the rappel spots by down climbing, the last spot is the most dangerous and we can down climb with prusiks batman style or rappel.

I have only been repelling once and it's been awhile. Anybody know of a place rent gear.

It was a cool trip to Mystery trail.. I would like to try it again.

    ooooooooooohhhhhhh

    February 13, 2013

I am thinking that we may have a rappelling practice before this hike. I hear one of them your suspended in air. I never have let myself down this way. We can setup up belays also.
