William O. Douglas Backpack

William O Douglas Wilderness Backpack
September 21st(1/2 day), 22nd, 23rd

There is still time to get more backpacking in, and the W.O.D. is best after frost has killed off the mosquitoes. With daylight getting shorter, take a half day off from work and leave at 1 pm for the 3 hour drive to White Pass Trailhead. Expect frost. Bring cold weather gear.

You MUST be able to hike 12 mile per day with a 35 lb pack. The hike up Mt. Tumac with a backpack is steep. Since this is a loop we need to keep pace to stay on schedule. NW Forest Pass. Maximum 10 with two hike leaders = 12.

24 miles, 4000 feet gain/loss.
Friday afternoon into evening, hike as far as daylight permitting(about 5 miles). On Saturday, follow the PCT further north and turn East to hike by Twin Lakes. Then head South and climb North side Tarmac Mountain with full pack and descend South side. This is 8.5 miles of mostly level terrain except for Tarmac Mountain. Add on another mile to Long John Lake. Finish Sunday with mostly downhill to Dog Lake, then 600 ft elevation back up to Dark Meadow, and the last section to trailhead.

Pre-Trip Meeting TBA

A fine weekend. Foggy beauty, fall color, fun group, elk bugles. Very cool area I'll have to see again.

We could only dream of the views this time, but I know they are there and I'll be back to see them. Great experience and challenge for me.

Awesome trip with some senior seasoned hikers. I rated 4 stars and will blame the missing star on the evil weather which denied us the views of Mt.Rainier.

    Umm....

...FIRE WEATHER WATCH IN EFFECT FROM LATE FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY EVENING FOR ABUNDANT LIGHTNING AND DRY FUELS FOR THE CASCADES AND THE ADJACENT FOOTHILLS...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN SEATTLE HAS ISSUED A FIRE WEATHER WATCH FOR ABUNDANT LIGHTNING AND DRY FUELS...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM LATE FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY EVENING.

    * THUNDERSTORMS...ISOLATED DRY THUNDERSTORMS FORMING SOUTH OF OR OVER THE AREA AND MOVING TO THE NORTH OR NORTHWEST AT 10 TO 15 MPH.

    * THUNDERSTORMS WINDS...DUE TO THE HIGH BASED NATURE OF THE STORMS THE WINDS SHOULD BE LIMITED...HOWEVER GUSTY WINDS ARE ALWAYS A THREAT WHEN THUNDERSTORMS ARE IN THE VICINITY.

    * IMPACTS...WITH THE CURRENT FUEL CONDITIONS AS THEY ARE...ANY LIGHTNING WOULD BE EFFICIENT AT STARTING FIRES.

A FIRE WEATHER WATCH MEANS THAT CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE FORECAST TO OCCUR. LISTEN FOR LATER FORECASTS AND POSSIBLE RED FLAG WARNINGS.

    September 20, 2012

    • Tom

It also lists fire zones, we're in zone 659, the southern edge of the areas listed which go all the way to Canada, .

I have a NWFS Pass. I'm driving from Longview so I wasn't sure about driving clear to Portland to meet at the transit center. I drive an Expedition so I can carry people and gear. The only thing is that it adds 100 miles to my drive.

    September 18, 2012

    • Keith

Bonnie or Chatchay, would one of you be able to take Ghazi or Randy up to meet Robert? Tamiko thinks she might not have enough room for four people.

Bonnie - I will message you my address. Thanks.

Ok so Bonnie, Chatchay, and Ghazi are leaving gateway at 140p. Keith, Dave and Bhaskar are leaving downtown at 130. Tom, you can swing by my house at 130...

I'm sure we can make 100 by tomorrow.. um, do they all have to be relevent to the hike?

Great idea, will see u at the TC at 1:40.

    September 20, 2012

  • Keith

My car is an Audi A3, a hatchback best for 3 people w/ backpacks. I'm picking Dave up downtown at 1:30, then need one more rider, either at Gateway or somewhere not too far from downtown. Tamiko is driving with Chas in her Honda CRV so she can take two more. Bhaskar, if you take the Max downtown (to the First and Oak stop), that's where Dave and I work and you can meet us there. Randy and Ghazi can go with Tamiko, meet at Gateway or elsewhere depending on what works for her.

    September 19, 2012

    • Keith

I know, but not as bad as mine. Maybe Robert can take one more.

      September 20, 2012

    • Tamiko S

I think four can fit, I'm just saying whoever is in there should be prepared for close quarters.

      September 20, 2012

  • Keith

Bhaskar, at the Max stop downtown, go around to the other side of the building (on Second between Stark and Oak). That's where I will be pulling up.

    September 20, 2012

  • Robert R.

Are we all going to meet somewhere along the way so that we can arrive at the TH together? There are several places right off the Kelso off ramp from I-5 that we could stage a meet.

    September 19, 2012

    • Keith

Robert, we've met on other trips right by the exit ramp at I-5 and Highway 12 at a restaurant called Spiffy's. Just an idea.

      September 19, 2012

    • Robert R.

Sounds like a good place to meet and a pit stop for those that need it.

Remember your camp stoves and Jackets!

Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie NF Imposes Fire Restrictions

Everett, WA, Sept. 18, 2012– The Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie NF is banning open campfires and smoking starting today. According to fire officials, a long persistent dry summer has created dangerously high fire conditions and the National Weather Service predicts more dry conditions ahead. Wood and charcoal fires are only allowed in developed campgrounds and group campgrounds that have established concrete or steel-grated fire pits or rings. Building and tending open campfires, including charcoal briquettes, cooking fires and warming fires are prohibited until further notice. Permissible sources for cooking or heat include portable stoves or lanterns using gas, jellied petroleum or pressurized liquid fuel. Smoking is allowed within enclosed vehicles, buildings and developed recreation sites. Violators can be fined up to $5,000 and/ or imprisoned up to six months in jail.

I'm late to this discussion, so help me out. I did want to be a driver and my diesel car means lower shared costs. Dave, I'm driving from home and can pick you up at the office. Is there another passenger for me? I could pick someone up and we could go straight to the TH.

    September 19, 2012

    • B.G

What car do you have? can you accommodate Myself, Ghazi and Randy? if yes I will take the Max from Hillsboro to Transit center. Lesser number of the cars its better :-)

      September 19, 2012

    • A former member

Yep decide who want to drive and I will be happy to ride with you ;). I will take the Max to Gateway TC

      September 19, 2012

  • B.G

Okay just making the final list who is riding with whom.

    1. Robert, Chatchay, Bonnie will rider together to the trail-head directly.

    2. Chas, Tamiko and Keith will start from transit center to the trailhead.

    3. That leaves Bhaskar, Ghazi, Dave and Randy. I can drive and my car can take 4 people including me, if either anyone of you wants to drive, I am okay to ride along with you folks, in that case I will take the Max from Hillsboro to Transit center. Other option is to cut down the third car and ride in Robert's SUV, I think it can easily take 4 more people. But that involves Robert to drive extra 2 hrs, and 100Miles more, while we can pay for the additional mileage, it would be too much to ask him to waste 2 hrs of his time :-).

  • Catherine R.

It's looking like this weekend may not be the best for me. I'm def. game in the future. Hope to meet you all and hike together. Excited about what meetup makes possible (this is my first time trying it out).

I have Chatchay and Bonnie who want to meet with me in Longview. Maybe you two can carpool together here and we can meet along I-5 in Kelso where there are lots of places to park. I have room for more.

Who is going to be at Gateway TC on Friday?

    September 18, 2012

  • Catherine R.

I looked it up and it wasn't too clear. Does one get an annual pass in which case it's a little bit of a waste for me since I'll prob. use it this one time b4 2013. Or is there a way to pay for the two nights? Any details? Thanks!

    September 18, 2012

Hi Dave, Yes I think I will drive to work... you are welcome to get a ride with me. And I can drop you off on Sunday, no worries.

    September 17, 2012

    • Dave

      Thanks Tamiko!

      September 17, 2012

  • Dave

I'm OK with the dog, but I'm slightly allergic so can't ride in the same car as pooch. Tamiko and Keith, are either of you driving to work and to White Pass? Can I hitch a ride with you from the office and get dropped at my house Sunday (my truck is out of commission right now)? Catherine, the Green Trails map is White Pass, map number 303. You can get it at REI..

    September 17, 2012

  • Catherine R.

BTW Thanks so much for organizing.

    September 17, 2012

  • Catherine R.

Sounds like it's likely the dog can come. Which he will be happy to discover. I have a one person tent which I will prob. bring. Which map is the one that's for this trail? Can one pick it up at REI/other places (just moved here so don't know the stores). If someone doesn't mind having a dog in their car I'd love to carpool but if that doesn't work I'm fine driving. In which case I have an older civic. and could fit another 1 or 2.

    September 17, 2012

  • Tom

Okay, here is the pre-trip. I figure we need 3 cars, who is going to drive? I'm riding with Tamiko who is driving. There is street parking at Gateway Park and Ride, no limits. Can everyone make it by 1 pm? Everyone has their own gear? So we don't need to worry about sharing gear. Friday is about 2-3 mile backpack in. Saturday is about 11 miles, and Sunday about 7.5 miles. I added the map to the description, anyone have any questions? Catherine is waiting for everyone to approve her dog on the trip. Bonnie is still tentative?

The drive is up I-5 to exit 68(i believe) and turn on Highway 12 to Randle. Packwood is the last place to get gas, etc. The trailhead is the PCT and is a left just past the Ski Area(<1/4 mi). If you start going downhill or hit Dog Lake you have gone too far.

    September 17, 2012

    • Chatchay Montagne S.

Thanks Chas. I need a ride with someone also. I am pretty much ready. Thanks.

      September 17, 2012

    • B.G

I can drive, my car can take 4 person including me.
Chas: Can you please post GPS directions to the trail head.

      September 17, 2012

  • Keith

What this hike needs is more assistant organizers.

Chatchay, Tamiko sez there is no premeeting scheduled.

    September 17, 2012

    • Chatchay Montagne S.

Thanks Keith. We should make this an organizers backpacking retreat. Lol...... I am looking forward to this adventurous experience.

      September 17, 2012

    • B.G

Hike Leaders: If there is no pretrip meeting, could you please state some info on gear, food etc. I know it's common sense but still want to make sure what the leader has to say :)

      September 17, 2012

  • B.G

I'm fine with the dog too.

    September 17, 2012
