Multnomah Falls - Franklin Ridge loop hike. Columbia Gorge. Oregon. #2

  • This location is shown only to members

Back by popular demand, I want to do this hike again.

This hike will start at Multnomah Falls Trailhead and will climb up to passing the top of Multnomah Falls. We will end at Horestail Falls Trailhead. Along the way we will visit few waterfalls and streams. Of course, there are some spectacular viewpoints along the trail. We will hike along Franklin Ridge and get a magnificent view of the Columbia River and of course, the gorge itself. My favorite waterfall is Triple Falls. We will make frequent stops to enjoy the scenery and take pictures. If you are one of these people that hike fast and do not make frequent stops, this hike may not be right for you. After the hike, we can treat ourselves to a meal or ice cream. This will be about a day hike. So plan on it. This time of year the daylight is shorter. Please bring flashlight or headlamp in case it gets dark on our way back to the starting point. If you have to be back by a certain time, please do not signed up for this hike.

I have hiked here before and one of my favorite default hike when I am not exploring new place(s) and want to stay condition. We will go at a pace where people are comfortable at. Please be in at least reasonable shape.

Here is the web link for more info:

You can also print the map out.

Hiking time: Approx 5-8 hours depending on the pace.

Distance: about 13.5 miles round trip (loop) - according to what GPS says by The Navigator

Elevation gain: 2760 feet

Difficulty: challenging due to steepness of the trail and length of hike

Bring: 2 liters of water, ten essentials, good hiking boots, good hiking pole(s) (you need them for balance, descending, and not hard on your knees (of course, it is optional)), non cotton clothing, gaitors (optional) sun screen, lunch, snacks.  Please plan accordingly.

If you need transportation out to the gorge, the first meeting place will be at Gateway Transit Center (8:00AM):

Gateway Park & Ride Transit Garage: I-84 east to Exit 7 Halsey St.; take an immediate right on the exit on NE 99th Ave. Parking structure is second building on the right; go to the south end of the building to enter.  From I-205 take Exit 21A Glisan St. from either north or south. Proceed to east side of freeway and turn left at the stoplight for NE 99th Ave. Continue past the Park & Ride surface lot to the parking structure. Meet in the southeast corner of the garage.

If you do not want to meet at the Gateway Transit Center, here is a second place we are meeting up at 8:30-9AM. (Multnomah Falls Trailhead)

Directions: Drive east from Portland on Interstate 84 to Exit 28 to Historic Columbia Highway 30 East. Drive about three miles to Multnomah Falls Lodge and start at Multnomah Falls Trailhead. Suggested donation of at least 5 dollars to carpool drivers or based on a person's vehicle MPG.

If you have any questions, please message me. Thank you. I am looking forward to hosting and leading this hiking event. Also meeting people and breaking the ice. Of course, having a good time.

The RSVP will open on Saturday, December 10, 2012. Thanks

Great. Just the three of us. The best part is the snow at the higher elevation. It feels like we are snowshoeing the whole time. Dinner was delicious. Thank you both for coming out and making this a wonderful hike. I will see you in a hike soon.
