Recap ore last meetup and jobs! (including one at my startup)

Hi hardwarians,

I hope you’re all well. Our last meetup, which was done in conjunction with Kickstarter, was pretty, darn, spectacular. We had:

  • Jessica Banks from Rock Paper Robot, and her wonderful journey from amazing but incredibly expensive kinetic furniture, to much cheaper but equally incredible furniture. No self-respecting apartment in NYC can go without the Ollie chair.
  • Vlad Dragusin from Candylab Toys, spoke about his incredible modern vintage wooden toys, and broke down some of the intricacies of pricing - a decision that can make or break the company.
  • Jonathan Bobrow, co-founder and CEO of Move38 spoke about his Troxes, and how you can build almost anything with triangles!
  • Also, big thanks to Kickstarter who helped put the whole event together. If you want to stay in the loop on inventive projects, behind-the-scenes stories, and bold ideas from the world of Design and Tech on Kickstarter, sign up to Invent Newsletter a twice-monthly intro to the creators and innovators working to build a more interesting, beautiful, and sustainable future. They also launched Hardware Studio together with Dragon Innovation, and Avnet to help hardware creators plan ahead for manufacturing before they launch on Kickstarter. Two parts of this effort will launch in September: the Hardware Studio Toolkit, a collection of valuable tools and tutorials that we’re making available to our community for free; and Hardware Studio Connection, which will prepare Kickstarter creators working on more complex projects with advice, feedback, and services from their partners.

Stuff going on in the Hardware World:

  • Gov Cuomo announced some of the big challenges related to the subway, and he's looking for hardware solutions. Every single one of us knows how needed this is!
  • The Hackaday Superconference is a huge gathering of hardware enthusiasts coming together to present their ideas and projects.  At Hackaday events, founders meet each other, new ideas are formed, and global leaders in the hardware community come together. For the 2017 event in Pasadena, CA, Hackaday has a call out for presentation proposals and tickets are on sale now. As in the past two years, tickets will sell out!

Jobs@HW Startups

  • At Kinetic (my startup) we’re building wearables for the factory, with the goal of reducing workplace injuries. We’re hiring our first sales generalist, who can help us convert our customers from pilots to deployments. If this sounds like something you’d want to do, hit reply or send an application. As a perk, you’ll get to RSVP to every hardware meetup!
  • Keen Home develops innovative hardware and software for the connected home. Our first product is the Smart Vent and our product line is currently expanding. We are looking for a full-stack software engineer to work on the various systems that support the manufacturing and running of the Smart Vent System. Email Nathan Meryash for more info ([address removed])

Keep building!
