Recap of the last HW meetup and jobs, jobs, jobs

Hey hardwarians!

The meetup on Monday was pretty spectacular (our next meetup will be on November 7th, and I’ll announce it soon). In case you missed it, here is a quick recap:

  • We had Sam Silver from SIMS municipal recycling facility, who took us on the surprisingly high-tech journey from when you throw something into a recycling bin, to it becoming reusable material. If you want to learn more you can go on facility tours of the Sunset Park MRF - you can either schedule private group visits for 10+ attendees or join one of the open tours offered periodically. Both are available through this link, by emailing Sam directly on [address removed] or following @simsmuni for future public events. There is also an upcoming Hack:Trash:NYC hackathon event from Oct 27-29 which Sims is sponsoring, and encourage anyone interested to participate in coming up with solutions for waste reduction.
  • Ravi Varma from Mesalight showed us his slick design for an outdoor portable lamp - he’ll be launching an Indiegogo campaign soon. You can get more info on
  • We heard from Abigail Edgecliffe-Johnson on the road to building remote control cars for kids to learn science and engineering. You can get your pre-orders on and if you’re interested in helping build Raceya, shoot Abigail an email: [address removed]

On November 7th, Kickstarter, Avnet, and Dragon Innovation will host an evening on all things hardware- and manufacturing-related. We’ll hear stories from engineers, share more about how you can participate in Hardware Studio, and host a series of roundtable discussions led by industry experts. Come meet the team behind Hardware Studio, and talk shop about manufacturing before your next campaign. RSVP here!

Jobs@HW Startups:

  • Pillar will forever change how data is collected and presented to one of the oldest and largest industries in existence. We don't have a job, we have a mission – bring better risk management and decision making to construction so we can build infrastructure that is desperately needed to support the generations of tomorrow. They are looking for a senior firmware engineer.
  • Senior Electrical Engineering Consultant seeks Junior-Mid Level Electrical Engineer (FW or HW). Benjamin Gebhardt is looking for someone to help him develop products for consumer and professional audio companies.  The ideal candidate is a junior or mid-level Hardware or Firmware Electrical Engineer with a strong interest in audio electronics.  Demonstrate-able experience is a must.  BSEE, work experience, NYC based, and Altium Designer proficiency a plus.  Position would be part time with many future possibilities. Interested parties should email:
  • XO is the innovation group of Newell brands and they are looking for hardware and software engineers. Check out the listings!
  • We are building a portable combo washer and dryer machine, aiming to make laundry more convenient for every apartment dwellers and dorm room student. We currently have a bench-model prototype that is undergoing testing. We are looking to partner with an engineer to help us complete testing and help us use the insights gained through testing in order to move on to the next step (prototype V2 / full works-like prototype). We're looking for someone who can go the distance with us. We're also interested in speaking with designers that will help in the manufacturing phase. If interested in hearing more about the product in any regard, please contact Nick Codispoti at

Keep building!
