Rockefeller Preserve Hike

Rockefeller Preserve

Beginner Terrain • Intermediate (Fast) Pace

"At Pocantico Hills...where the fine views invite the soul...I have spent many delightful hours, studying the beautiful views, the trees and fine landscape effects of that very interesting section of the Hudson River..." Mr. John D. Rockefeller, Sr. Random Reminiscences - 1908 (Photo, Tiffany Black)

Contact: Feel free to post a question to the site or send me an email.  You may also call me:

Terrain: Easy to moderate, mainly rolling hills.

Distance: 4+ miles  (Not including optional post hike lake loop walk.)

Time: 1  1/2+ hours

Pace: Moderate to brisk. Although this is a beginner hike, and nobody gets left behind, we walk at a very brisk pace! Please assess your ability to keep this pace before signing up.

Meeting location: We will meet at the the MAIN Parking lot for the Rockefeller State Park Preserve.

The Parking lot is located on the south side of Route 117 approximately halfway between Route 9A to the East and Route 9 to the West. There are gates and stone walls at the entrance, a large horse-trailer parking lot, a little toll booth, a visitors center and a bathroom building.

Meet on the benches near the restroom.

Latitude:[masked] Longitude: [masked]

Cancellation notices: I will cancel by 2:00pm if the weather looks dicey or if the hiking conditions are not great.

If your plans change, please be sure to change your RSVP to NO on the hike page. Leaving a comment won't free up a spot on the list. Thanks!

Pets: Friendly, well behaved dogs are welcome. The park requires dogs to be leashed at all times.  It is possible that we will encounter one or more horses with riders or carriages.

Hike Description: The usual...

Julia spoiled the sheep dogs. Whenever they see our group they expect to be petted by her. Tonight they gave me their look of tactile deprivation and I became the Julia substitute dog whisperer.

After 2/3 of the hike we broke up into 2 groups. 1 1/2hr 4 mile group (did 4+) and a 2hr 5mile group (5.3 miles). Most of the hike was at 3.2mph, something to be prowd of. We will not always split the hike up. Lambs survived Easter.
