  • Hi all!

I'm keeping this "event" as an ongoing open forum

I figured this would be a good way to start a discussion that would be easily viewed/accessible to everyone. The message board doesn't seem to be an effective way to enable everyone to take part...or perhaps I haven't quite figured it out yet.

Either way, I want your feedback and suggestions.

What would you like the group to take part in that you haven't seen before?

    What other venues?

    Open mics?

    Jam sessions?

    Themes?

Private rooms VS open area lounge area?

    Non-karaoke events or social events?

Please comment and post any suggestions and fun ideas you may have below. And don't be shy if you're a member, but have yet to attend a Meetup - I'd like to get feedback from everyone!

    Hey all!

I just joined your group, and I'm quite excited. Being that this next meet up falls on New Year's Eve, we're going to have to choose our venue wisely...things get booked quickly during the holidays! I'm up for anything but, I do think something with a reservation will work best. Looking forward to meeting everyone =)

Hi! I'm new here. At this point I would love to get to know the members of this meetup, so I would vote por a private room event. But, as long as there is music, I'm up for any of the other options.

I would definitely be willing to pay/participate if we got a private room! K-town has tons of karaoke bars. There is one in Astoria too!

Is this New Years Eve? Looking forward to singing in a nice place with my friend and all of you. Open mics would be fun as well as private rooms.

I would love to have you guys come to my Karaoke one night... I think the crowd would enjoy my Tuesday spot more... We offer great deals on drinks and I offer specials for meetup responders... I guarantee you a karaoke night you have never experienced before... Im on the mic all night and we have a lot of fun.... as for suggestions....

Open area lounge areas are a lot better... private rooms limit you to the people who are already there...

Themes can be nice... I mean im out of my mind I totally would dress as a penguin or something... just don't limit the songs (ie 80's night or 90's night) less people will show

Well im done lol sooooo let me know if we can work together! See you all at the next event!

Japas 38 has private rooms, but the open bar is so cozy my MBA Alumni group would put tables together.

http://www.karaokejapas38.com/ I never had less than awesome time at this 38th St spot slightly above k-town. It's reasonable and the last New Year's I spent there it was pretty empty.

The Met was scary but fun! Here's another open mic option in the Upper East Side: Cleopatra's Needle. Open mic is Sundays (4-8pm) or Wednesday (7-11)

I think open mics and jam sessions will be great too. Maybe we can plan to attend open mics on a regular basis. I heard some venues are open to making special arrangements with a group.

Metropolitan Room has open mic every 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month. 12pm noon - 2:30pm. Looks like a more upscale venue. http://metropolitanro...

Another open-mic venue on Monday night. It's close to downtown Brooklyn. I suspect this one is closer to karaoke, but it has a live band: http://www.threesbrew...

I also suggest having a private room. A few other karaoke groups that I go to normally do that and have good results. The benefits are (1) a much shorter song queue so everyone gets to sing more, (2) a quieter environment so we don't have to fight with the bar noise when we sing or talk. But if we are having a room, that means there is a capacity limit and the cost is higher, so people need to honor their RSVP. (Some groups have a penalty for people who RSVP for a private room event but don't show, because they waste a spot from a limited pool and also may sometimes increase the costs for other attendees.)

    2 · June 2, 2015

    • Henry

Thanks. To address the no-show situation, some groups I went to have a two-strike policy: if you RSVP and then no show and no explanation twice, then you are banned. (But I don't know how strictly they enforce it, because most people are pretty well behaved.) Also, there are many karaoke places that charge the private room per person per hour, so if there are no-shows, it doesn't increase the costs for other people.

I almost feel a private-room event is more fun when it is between 8-15 people. There was once I went to an event with 20 people in a private room. The group was loud and the song queue was long, and it felt almost the same as sitting in a open bar. The advantages of having a private room vanished, and several people later complained it was not as fun as when the group was smaller. But then again, if you put a limit on the capacity, people who can't get in might feel frustrated. So maybe the best way is to keep both open-bar and private-room events for variety.

Guys!!! For those of you who've RSVPed through here, RSVP on the new Meetup event I just posted. I'm keeping this as an ongoing open forum.

I chose Karaoke Duet 35 for this coming Tuesday, June 9th, at 6 PM.

The live band karaoke was fun last time. One big drawback is you get one, maybe two songs the whole night. And the song list is short. So you need to pick in advance.

Johnny Utah's again maybe? Or from this list.

I'm a novice at this, not of singing, but of karaoke bars/venues. Other than most weekdays at my local Queens senior center (karaoke activity comes with the cost of lunch), I've only been to one place here in Flushing, Soho KTV. (It was a fundraiser for queensoratorio.org.) I wrote a Yelp review on the venue. I haven't been to a TGFRK event yet, since I'm a bit old for loud/noisy/raucus, but..it's intriguing.

There is great seasonal karaoke on Tuesdays starting at 7pm at Billies Black (348??? w 119th st), Karaoke All Stars w/ Patrick Riley. There is another great karaoke every Tuesday at Camaradas, off 115th St and First Avenue, starts at 8PM. a monthly open mic at Shrine, [masked]th Avenue, every last Tuesday of the month...

I love all of these ideas. I haven't yet explored Harlem because I wanted to accommodate everyone from the outer boroughs and Queens, etc., at a more centralized location. Which of these venues do you feel would be best at accommodating a large group? How busy does it get, and how often would people get a chance to sing. I think that's also another main issue... There's a lot of us that have to compete with non-members for song time...

well, if you have a large group, then Billies Black isn't as good a choice as it is quite intimate and has its own "resident" singers... Cameraras is also not great because it has room, just not too much seating... now mind you, this is Tuesday karaoke, I have other recommendations, depending if the day might be changed.

I found this link with a list of karaoke spots. Not sure if anyone knows any of them. It's pretty recent. Hope this helps. http://www.refinery29.com/the-best-karaoke-bars-in-nyc#slide

Theme Ideas: Pick a letter and only sing artists that start with letter. Pick a year and only picks songs released during that year. Songs ONLY in musicals. There may make a bit limited but I think it also makes it more creative. If anyone has been to any place on the list, please chime in.

A private room event would be awesome! We wouldn't have to contend with outside singers, and could set our own order instead of relying on a bartender/KJ to keep it even. I'd be willing to contribute to the cost of the room were this to happen!

    1 · May 29, 2015
