  • Jan 26, 2014 · 3:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Apologies again for so many changes. After much discussion, we had to change dates yet again. Hope Mother Nature doesn't make decisions for us again! Glad to hear that so many of you raised that cup on Jan 3rd at 9pm to honor the Professor!

Thanks to Charlene we have this wonderful space again for our yearly toast to the Professor gathering.  The toast is celebrated worldwide by Tolkien fans! Hope to see you there!

Read about the Toast on the Tolkien Society Website here:

http://www.tolkiensociety.org/toast

We recommend the purchase of food and drink from the establishment as we get use of the room free for our event!

And what was JRR T himself up to 100 years ago to the day of our postponed Birthday Toast, Jan 26 (a Monday that year)? Making perhaps one of his first appearances as an author of vivid talent!

Apologies to duck out last minute—stuck finishing a work project that is taking much longer than I anticipated. :( I am there with you all in spirit! Cheers!

Had a wonderful time chillin with you all at a good meetup, and toast to The Professor. My only regret is I didn't get to engage in longer conversations with some of the attendees :-(

It was a great meeting and it was nice to be able to move from table to table and speak with other people. The food was great and the wait staff accommodating. I enjoyed the video and liked that you kept the sound low.

I had a great time, it was good to see you all.

Good to see everyone! Had a nice time chatting and watching behind the scenes footage.

It was great to finally toast the Professor w/the group. I enjoyed catching up w/old friends & meeting new people.

Nice venue and watching the behind the scenes video interspersed with talking with attendees was fun. Only took about about an hour and 15 minutes to drive the 58 miles to home. For once no significant traffic!

  • Robert

I have to work today -- but should be there after 5:30pm!

    1 · January 26, 2014

See you later. Coming from matinee.

In prep for our Meetup Part One:

Prof Corey Olsen made some brilliant points at the Mythgard.org site under Riddles in the Dark (their discussion of the Hobbit films and what they will turn out to be like)... He basically said that given the lack of original connection the book had with the whole Legendarium and Tolkien's very superficial half-hearted attempt in 1960 to rewrite the book with LotR and the Silm in mind the whole scenario with these foolhardy (toll kuhn!) dwarves and the gradual change in the book from their being mere treasure hunters to the later Thorin who wants to reclaim his kingdom.... what PJ is doing is a "thought experiment" in trying to LotRize and Simarillionize (somewhat) the Hobbit...

That date is good for me.

    1 · January 7, 2014

  • Beth P.

I'm planning on attending on the new date.

    1 · January 6, 2014

Date looks good, I should be able to attend no problem. ;) I'll let you know if anything changes.

I am looking forward to meeting all of you and passionately discussing Tolkien!

    2 · January 6, 2014

  • Charlene B.

Looks like we have 30 attending the event on Sunday, Jan 26th, at 3pm. Please confirm you are attending 24 to 48 hours before then, so that I can touch base with Stone Creek management. Along with eating, drinking and socializing, we've got a some fun things planned for this gathering. If you wish to attend in costume from The Hobbit or LOTRs, please do so, as it is always encouraged.

Thanks for taking the initiative and both canceling and rescheduling the event. Hopefully I can make it on the 24th! Stay safe and warm everyone!

    January 3, 2014

    • Charlene B.

Its now the 26th Sam from 3-7pm

      January 6, 2014

  • Bill W.

Sunday afternoons are the one time I can't make it. What was wrong with the 24th?

    January 5, 2014

    • Apulia

People responsible for programming couldn't make it.

      January 5, 2014

    • Apulia

      :(

      January 5, 2014

  • Ken B.

26th appears to be fine for me.

  • Bill W.

Wise move. Hope to see you there.

    January 3, 2014

  • Apulia

I apologize for inundating you all with email notifications. I didn't want anyone to show up at the venue tonight and be angry that they weren't notified. Hope you will all still be able to come to the next date that we were offered.

    January 3, 2014

  • Beth P.

I'm a bit disappointed, but I think you made a wise decision. It's just too cold and slippery out.

    January 3, 2014

    • Apulia

Yes, we are all disappointed that we can't participate with everyone else in the Tolkien world as a group.

      January 3, 2014

  • Ann

Glad it's being rescheduled; treacherously bitter cold forcasted for today & tonight.

    January 3, 2014

  • Apulia

Where is Radagast when you need him? I need a weather report.

    January 2, 2014

    • Apulia

Thank you, Ken the Brown. We'll be posting whether we will be meeting at 12 noon tomorrow.

      January 3, 2014

      Well, I figured I had half the name . . . ;-)

Time to really decide if PJ is a genius or a traitor! (or maybe both!)

    1 · December 19, 2013

  • Robbie

New to the group (thanks for accepting me). Hope to make it to the toast. Happy X-Mas to those who celebrate. Peace, R

Thanks, Apulia :) Did you receive my recent message? I hope all is well with you!

      January 1, 2014

    • Apulia

Yes, Robbie. I responded today. Sorry for the delay.

My theatre re-opens for our next show on the 3rd, so maybe next year. But I'll think a toast at him later that evening.
Our new show is "Outside Mullingar" w/ Bryan F O'Byrne & Debra Messing.

    December 31, 2013

  • Sam

    I'm looking forward to this!

    (weather permitting, of course!)

Incidental to the Hobbit - DofS flick, I've uploaded a parody from 1979 entitled "Smaug the Magic Dragon" in the "More" - "Files" folder. http://files.meetup.com/1762568/Smaug%20the%20Magic%20Dragon%20lyrics%20and%20chords%20from%20NESFA%20Hymnal.pdf

These are sing alongs. They can be downloaded and printed out.

Drat, all their wines are French. None of the really nice Rhine wines!

    December 19, 2013

    • Apulia

And, that means red wine and rose as well. :)

      Yep!!

Some things to spark fire: Our own version of Riddles in the Dark (Prof Corey Olsen's 2 yr running discussion of what WILL or WILL NOT be in the next film.)

We should write down our answers, seal them in envelopes and open them next year! Who will guess right?

I am so looking forward to this annual evening, and we'll be in the "back room" of Stone Creek bar and lounge. Time to eat, drink and be merry!

    1 · December 18, 2013

    • Dennis

Or perhaps eat, drink and be Pippin! ;-)

      1 · December 20, 2013

I wonder if Smaug will turn up and turn out to be nothing but a lounge lizard?

    1 · December 19, 2013

    • Apulia

      I am imagining this.

      December 20, 2013

  • Bill W.

Hope to be there this year!
