Not So Urban Athletics: Hike Island Pond and the Lemon Squeezer

  • 4 days ago · 9:45 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Combining the turkey dinner, appetizers and other snacks, the average American consumes about 4,500 to 5,000 calories on Thanksgiving. In one day you’ve gained 1 to 2 pounds. Yeah. Let's burn off some of those calories you consumed last week with a late autumn hike in nearby Harriman State Park.

This loop hike climbs to the summits of Green Pond and Island Pond Mountains, goes through the narrow rock formation Lemon Squeezer, and passes the historic Boston Mine, a long abandoned and flooded iron excavation.

A $3.00 organization fee will be collected at this event; your organizer is in the running for hardest working person on meetup. While everyone else is running in the other direction, I'll be the first one to jump in front of that bear when he tries to eat you.

The important stuff!

•  This is going to be an INTERMEDIATE hike of about 8.5 miles. You don't need to be a world-class athlete to participate, but you need to be in decent physical shape. We will be out all day so leave your afternoon/evening open.

•  This is a social hike, the pace will be moderate -- we'll be stopping to take in the views and smell the flowers. If you yearn to channel your inner Mountain Goat and feel the need to race everyone to the top of the mountain, this is not the hiking trip for you.

•  Dress in layers of non-cotton clothing, wear hiking boots or trail shoes (I wouldn't recommend sneakers but that is at your discretion), a hat and gloves, bring 3 liters of fluid, a packed lunch and/or snacks.

•  Rain cancels the hike.

• No guests allowed, sorry.

How do I get there?

Bus: This hike is mass transit accessible. Take the 8:30 AM Shortline bus from Port Authority. Buy tickets to Southfield, but ask the bus driver to let you off at Arden Valley Road in Arden next to a "Welcome to Harriman State Park" sign (a couple of miles north of Southfields). Return bus stops across the street -- wave the driver down.  After you get off the bus, make a right onto Arden Valley Rd., walk across the bridge over the NY State Thruway, then make your first right into the parking lot. Round trip bus fare is $28.50.

Driving: Take N.Y. Route 17 north through Sloatsburg, Tuxedo and Southfields. About two miles north of Southfields, turn right onto Arden Valley Road. Cross the bridge over the New York State Thruway, then make the first right at a sign "Hikers' Trailhead Parking." Park in the dirt parking area to the west of a large meadow, known as the Elk Pen. Please post if you are driving and can pick up passengers (how many and from where), If you need a ride, please be proactive and contact a driver directly. Passengers, as a courtesy you should chip in for gas, tolls, and coffee for the driver.

Hi Britt, I'm planning to be at Port Authority by 8am also. Hope to meet you in the line for the bus. I'm planning to wear a lightweight teal green jacket.

People, my mobile number is[masked], contact me in the morning if you have issues. Drivers, be on time or EARLY as I will not wait for latecomers. Bus riders, contact me if it appears the bus is running late.

This is a cold weather hike so come prepared in layers of non cotton clothing you can remove as you heat up. Hats and gloves are a good idea also.

I plan to have us done before dark but just in case bring a headlamp, or flashlight if that is all you have.

Finally, don't forget your packed lunch and about 2 liters of water. I'd also pack a small thermos of a hot drink as that's a nice pick me up.

What makes this an intermediate hike?

    November 26

    • Kevin

Lucy, this hike is intermediate because of the distance. There isn't too much elevation gain or rock scrambling on this one.

I've signed for this event, but I'm not a paid Shorewalker annual member. Am I allowed to attend?
