It's summer, but we're back to meshing! We're excited to have the team from Helium in town to showcase their first hotspot device and talk about their approach to building a decentralized communications network.
We start at 6:30 with food and snacks, and starting at 7 pm, Mark from Helium will walk through the network, the blockchain that powers it, and deploy an end-to-end demo of the hotspot. We'll discuss some potential use cases, New York's meshing community, and wrap up around 8 or 8:30.
The Helium community are building a peer-to-peer wireless network. Anyone can participate by hosting a Helium Hotspot and providing miles of wireless coverage for internet of things devices, from Invisileash smart pet collars to Lime scooters and Agulus farm sensors. Hotspots also act as miners on the Helium Blockchain for a new cryptocurrency, Helium.
After just three weeks of Hotspot availability, people in over 125 cities across 33 US states from Alaska to Florida, and California to New York have signed up to deploy coverage. Austin is the first launch city with New York and several others coming shortly after.
