What we're about

Looking to join a group to play some escape games in New York City? Lock yourself in here with us, then!

For the uninitiated: Escape rooms, or escape games, are exciting hour-long adventure games that take place in rooms full of puzzles and mysteries. You and a squad of people work together to find clues and solve said puzzles, to try and escape before time runs out!

New York City has a lot of great escape room locations to try out, many of them in Manhattan. We'll meet up, have some food and drinks before or after, and have a great time cracking these rooms. Check out our Photos (https://www.meetup.com/New-York-City-Escape-Rooms-Escape-Games-Meetup/photos/) to see where we've been so far!

Why play with us? Every month, we reserve rooms at a different escape games company, meaning you'll get a chance to experience a different part of NYC; places familiar and new. Because we reserve weeks in advance, RSVPing to our meetups means that you're guaranteed a spot to play at the room of your choice, with people who are just as excited about escape games! No need to book a ticket on your own and hope that you get thrown in with a decent group.

Whether you're new or old to escape rooms, or new or old to NYC in general, try one of our meetups this month!

LATEST UPDATE, 08/13/19: Made the group rules section more concise for reading.

When you have the time, please carefully and thoroughly read through our general Meetup rules:

• New events will be posted by me during the first week of every month. (There may also be a voting poll for upcoming events, so be sure to check the Poll page before new events are posted.)

• As the group organizer, I'll be reserving the rooms ahead of time, usually at least 10 days before the event date. Sometimes, other parties will beat us to the planned reservation time, so sorry in advance if that happens after you've already RSVP'd and paid. You will of course receive a full refund of whatever you've paid if you can no longer make it because of this circumstance.

• If you choose to RSVP, please be kind and courteous about payment deadlines. We want to make sure that everyone who wants to come to an event has a chance to sign up, and that others aren't just holding unpaid spots.

• When attending an official meetup, please bring your photo I.D. and the info of an emergency contact.

The most important rules of our group are: be kind and be honest! This includes, and is not limited to:

• Showing up to events early, not at start time or afterwards

• Working together with your teammates, in a patient and open-minded manner

• Restraining from unwarranted and inappropriate conduct and contact (at events and outside of events)

• Good sportsmanship, in wins and losses!

I'm looking forward to tons of great meetups with everyone,

- Jon

HOW TO PAY FOR EVENTS (revised on 08/13/19):

• All payments should be sent to my Venmo account: @Jonathan-Apana or my Paypal account: https://paypal.me/jonapana . If Zelle is easier for you, please send me a DM on Meetup. Please include the date, time, and description of your payment (e.g. "11/26/18, 5pm meetup, RSVP deposit"). Please take a screenshot whenever you send or receive money, or any texts or emails about payments. We'd like to protect everyone involved in the making of our great events!

• When you RSVP, you'll have 10 days (or less if an event is sooner than that) to send the RSVP deposit to hold your spot. If you aren't able to send your deposit in time, and someone is on the Waitlist, your RSVP will be replaced with that person's (in order of date waitlisted). Deposits become nonrefundable the week of an event.

• After you've sent your deposit, the rest of your payment must be sent before we start our game or else you won't be able to join. We'd like to use an honor system but we also keep track of who has or hasn't paid, so please let me know if you have any questions about what is due. If you've already paid this, but can no longer make it to our game, let me know ASAP before we start and you'll be refunded this full amount.

• Even if an event is full, please be sure to join the Waitlist! If a last-minute spot opens up during the week of an event, you'll only have to pay the RSVP deposit if you were on the Waitlist (and still are planning to attend).

• If I or any other host is unable to attend an official meetup, the event is not cancelled. I will notify all attendees and ask for a volunteer from the group to have their name added to our reservation, after which I will contact the venue and give them the updated information. Any additional charges will be reimbursed by myself.

• If for any other reason an event is cancelled, or extreme circumstances prevent a majority of attendees from getting to the venue in time, all payments will be reimbursed to those individuals.

• Any money that is sent to me for an event only covers the cost of your ticket. It is neither pocketed by me nor used to cover food, drinks, Meetup.com subscriptions, etc. If you're unsure about the actual cost of a ticket, I would encourage you to visit that escape room's website and please let me know if there are any discrepancies!

PLEASE BE AWARE: I will not be responsible for disputes concerning the reservation of, payment of, and actions that occur before, during, and after unofficial meetups (events not officially posted by myself on this Meetup page). Members that attend said unofficial meetups will be responsible for their own transactions, agreements, and personal conduct. This includes their own verification for age-restricted events.

ESCAPE FROM THE MUSEUM, The Reattempt! July 2020 Virtual Side-Event, Day 1

The museum beckons you back! Thanks to everyone who took part in the debut of my "Escape From The Museum" game last weekend. The feedback was great and it was certainly an exciting learning experience. Since no one was able to defeat the museum, I invite you to try again next weekend! "Escape From The Museum" is an online escape room, inspired by Sydney Krawiec's popular "Hogwarts Digital Escape Room," which she created using Google Forms. I've applied my escape experience to create a broader and challenging adventure in a similar format. We'll be using Discord again to communicate. The link is live already, so you have time to familiarize yourself with the platform. NOTE: If you haven't played the game yet or want to start over from the beginning, please RSVP to Day 1. For those of you who completed the first portion at the last meetup, please RSVP to Day 2. If you're not familiar with the format, you can try Sydney's room first here: https://bit.ly/3f9tvKQ If you aren't able to make it our meetup next weekend, you can try my room by yourself here: https://bit.ly/3ioDOgi I won't be able to assist you live, but you can send me a message if you need hints. The link to the game is permanent, so you can always exit and come back to it. There's no cost for this event. Be safe and well!
