# It's finally Springtime so let’s head back to pretty Snug Harbor and enjoy the colorful blooms

We'll meet at noon at the top of the escalators at the SI Ferry Terminal and leave on the free 12:30 ferry over to Staten Island.
Once we arrive at St. George we will take the S40 bus at Gate D along Richmond Terrace for a short ride to Snug Harbor. (Metrocard and a free transfer from the subway)

Snug Harbor in the spring is a veritable bloomfest. Especially at the beautiful and very photogenic Chinese Scholars Garden where spring blossoms are everywhere. (Snug Harbor, itself, is free but they charge $5.00 ($4 for seniors) admission for the Scholar's Garden)

Also to check out on the 20th, is “Cottage Row Curiosities”, a community artisan market at Snug Harbor featuring over fifty Staten Island vendors, plus music, entertainment, food, and more.

There are other areas here with many things to see and photograph including historic buildings. A decent selection of lenses might be useful from wide-angle to macro lenses, however, all types of cameras are welcome as always. Tripods are not welcome in the garden.

"Horticulture is integral to Snug Harbor’s history. Staten Island’s Botanical Garden has been constantly evolving since it was founded in 1977 and incorporated with Snug Harbor Cultural Center in 2008. From its initial English Perennial Border planting to the addition of the New York Chinese Scholar’s Garden in 1999 and the Richmond County Savings Foundation Tuscan Garden completed in 2011, our gardens are a popular attraction for all visitors. Throughout history, gardens have reflected landscape styles of various periods and the ways in which people view their relationship to nature. Remaining true to this purpose, the Botanical Garden includes gardens that represent specific periods and places, which coexist alongside more contemporary interpretations. Visitors enjoy the gardens in all seasons for their unique qualities, as well as for educational tools, recreation, and as backdrops for public programs."

After our visit, we can (as desired) gather to visit a nearby restaurant for snacks and beverages before returning to the ferry and home.

“Dance Parade returns to the streets Saturday, May 18, 2024 and will celebrate the 18th Annual Parade and Festival with 10,000 dancers featuring over 100 unique styles of dance. A Ribbon Cutting Ceremony kicks off the event at 11:45 am at 17th Street and Sixth Avenue (Avenue of the Americas)”

This parade is a first for our Meetup Group although I have enjoyed it a few times. This year I invite you to join me in enjoying and capturing it.

Once we are assembled we’ll take up spots where we get a good view of the parade as it begins to pass us. Then follow the parade as it makes its way to Tompkins Square Park in the East Village continuing to make fun captures of the participants as we go.

We will try to stay together as a group as much as possible but the streets will be crowded and if folks lose the group we can regroup on the corner of Tompkins Square Park at Avenue A and East 10th Street as the parade and we arrive in that area.

As always any camera even cell phones are welcome but I recommend telephoto lenses to get in close for portraits and a wide-angle lens for group shots. We will be moving too fast for any tripod use.

This is a colorful and fun parade with many opportunities for great photos. Wear good comfortable walking shoes as it’s a fairly long route.

After the parade and when we regroup we can look for refreshments in the area.
