Manhattanhenge 2012 - Full Sunset

Photo: Manhattanhenge 2011 from East 23rd Street

UPDATED: 7/10/2012

Webpage: Manhattanhenge|Hayden Planetarium

Cathy R. reminded me that there is another Manhattanhenge happening this year - and we’re gonna try to catch the full sun on Wednesday July 11th at 8:24pm.

Manhattanhenge is "when the setting Sun aligns precisely with the Manhattan street grid, creating a radiant glow of light across Manhattan's brick and steel canyons, simultaneously illuminating both the north and south sides of every cross street of the borough's grid. A rare and beautiful sight”…"Clear cross streets include 14th, 23rd, 34th. 42nd, 57th, and several streets adjacent to them. The Empire State building and the Chrysler building render 34th street and 42nd streets especially striking vistas."

The meetup point is on the Overpass on East 42nd St & Tudor City Place.

* All cameras are welcome -- DSLRs, Point & Shoot, Cell Phones, Disposables…

* Tripods are a good idea - but be warned that we may not have space for them - as we will be on a small overpass.

* Dress appropiately for the weather. Bring snacks and a drink.

* Format your memory cards and charge your batteries.

* There will be a reporter named Joel Rose from NPR News who will be tagging along to write a story on photographers shooting the Manhattanhenge. He would like to speak to a few of us about this event, if you are interested.

* Please be on time! I will not wait for late comers and I will not answer calls & messages after 7pm.

** WARNING!! There is currently a large number of RSVPs and most likely the Overpass will be extremely crowded with other people. Also, there are two large trees that partially block the street view. Personally, I may go out to the middle of 42nd street to capture the sunset.

Email or text me with questions or comments before the day of the event. Make sure you identify yourself in your message… ~Sally[masked]

I did a 'kind of' went as well. I saw the 'maybe' update about moving to 23rd but it didn't convince me (native new yorker here). So I ended up going to 34th Street (rebel by nature) and will add pics later.

I found a good spot at 34th street and decided to stay there and not go to 23rd street. It was totally amazing!!!!

I sort of went... I got there about 6.45 and the space was already loaded up with pros with giant tripods and video cameras, for an 8.30 sunset. And trees were blocking half the brdige besides. And on top of it, my lens started acting up again and wouldn't focus. But Sally was thinking on her feet and made plans to move it almost immediately. I left because I wouldn't be able to get a good shot anyway, but I was sure it would end up turning out OK had I stayed

It was way too crowded at 42nd Street as predicted, so I moved the group to 23rd Street, under the FDR Drive. We had the whole corner to ourselves and caught an amazing view of the sunset. Looking forward to seeing some great photos.

Also the nearest train to the meetup point is Grand Central Terminal (4,5,6 7). I will be wearing a green long sleeve shirt and blue jeans.

    July 11, 2012

  • Sally

If you feel that you'll have a better view at one of the other major streets, please go ahead. Anything for a great shot.

A few tips for tonight's Manhattanhenge shoot. 1. Use a circular polarizing filter. 2. Try zooming between 28mm to 200 mm
    3. Set camera for AE Bracketing to get range of exposures for a given shot. 4. Most people and objects between you and sun will be in total or
Partial silhouette. Wait for right moment for people or cars

  • Sally

Wow! That is a lot more money. Not that you’ll have it for tomorrow, but you can always get a bargain on eBay:

    July 11, 2012

  • Sally

My lens is 67mm and I got a circular polarizer for $25 at Best Buy. 77mm shouldn't be that much more.

    July 10, 2012

  • Sally

Nikhil & Ivy: please try to be on time. If you're running late, try to find us at 42nd and Tudor City Place.

    July 9, 2012

  • Sally

@Stephen: I didn't host a Manhattanhrnge meetup last year. I went with New York Shutterbugs.

    July 9, 2012

  • Ivy G.

Hi. I'm also traveling for NJ so might be late if that is ok

    July 9, 2012

  • Sally

    88 RSVPs!! That's a lot of people!!

As I mentioned, usually half or less shows up to the meetups. If you can't make it, please change it from "yes" to "no". Your help is appreciated :)

    July 9, 2012

  • Stephanie

OK with the time change, will be there.

    July 5, 2012

  • Sally

Cathy has pointed out to me that 42nd may be overcrowded so I will change the meetup time from 7:45pm to 7:00pm.

    July 4, 2012

  • Sally

Hi Renee: Usually 50% or less on the “yes” list show up so I don’t think meeting earlier is necessary. As far as pointers for shooting sunsets, I found a nice article online here: http://digital-photography-school.com/how-to-photograph-sunrises-and-sunsets

    July 2, 2012

  • Renee_W

Does anyone have any pointers for photographing sunsets? My camera is too small to use a filter and I don't want to blow out all of my highlights. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

    July 2, 2012

  • Renee_W

Sally do you think the group might need to meet 20 - 30 minutes earlier so we can stakeout a good view spot? It's a large group so we will need plenty of space.

    July 2, 2012

  • yjmarigold

Have a great time. I had planned to be elsewhere that night already.

    July 1, 2012

  • Stephanie

    Excellent, thanks Sally.

    July 1, 2012

  • Sally

There will only be one meetup point, and I have lifted the waiting list. My co-organizer Bianca will be there to help me and Cathy keep the group together.

    1 · July 1, 2012

  • Stephanie

Just joined the wait list also, but wondering if there can be two location meetups? The first group will be at the first location, and maybe a second co-organizer can lead a second group? Just wondering...

    July 1, 2012

  • Sally

Stephen: I added 5 more spots and included a waiting list.
