Re: [NYC-Pints-N-Purls] Hurricane Sandy Relief Efforts

I also recommend emailing here: [address removed] to sign up for opportunities to volunteer.

My efforts have been dedicated to Brooklyn, if only because this is my borough, and because the need is so great and there are no official agencies showing up to help (at least I haven't seen anyone with my own eyes) - not in Red Hook or the Rockaways, two areas hit really hard.

My point is - it's not organized - it's neighbors and families getting the word out (via twitter mostly, some phone-tree work), and then showing up to help each other.

I hope this email reaches everyone well, with light, warmth and feeling connected to those you hold dear. Deborah and I will be collecting money at the meetup on Wednesday if anyone wishes to donate to a local charity. Right now, we are leaning towards sending funds to the LES Girls Club for the Refill the Fridge Fund. All of the families served by the LES Girls Club live in the effected area.

If you are not joining us on Wednesday, I encourage you to give money, time, or whatever else you are able to at this time of need for so many New Yorkers (see links below). There are many agencies accepting donations, as well as many grass roots movements that need able bodies to get up and down apartment buildings to drop off food and supplies to those who are still without power and elevators. Also, search on the Meetup site for Hurricane Sandy meetups to see where you can help.

The challenge: To donate at least the amount that you spend in beer, wine or other beverages over the course of one week in cash, goods (food, water, toiletries, cleaning supplies, etc.), or in volunteer time. For some of us that is a nice sum.

If you have been effected by the storm and are reading this email. Please reach out and let me know if I or anyone in this group may be able to help you with anything. My number is 347/578-4901.

This email is also on the discussion board under Charity Projects & Ideas. Please post any other ideas, links, or places that need help.
