NYC Queer Playback Theater invites queer people and allies to share personal stories and honors them by “playing back” improvisationally to the storyteller. Using sound and movement, metaphor and feeling, we strive to give the storyteller the opportunity for new perspective, interpretation and transformation by seeing their story played back to them. As actors and audience, we intend to listen and use earnest, theatrical responses to grow empathy and connection.
We are a group of playful, warm and socially-conscious queer people and allies, who come together on a monthly basis to practice our skills at Playback Theatre, an internationally-recognized, community building art-form. Each rehearsal is open to all, regardless of acting experience. We play improv games, practice the skills of Playback Theatre and often go out for a meal or snack afterwards.
Please join us if this sounds exciting, fun, meaningful and/or needed!
Celeste, who attended our April 2019 rehearsal, wrote: “Meeting all of you and having a chance to insert a little expression and performance into my brief New York visit was so so valuable. Much gratitude to you all for making it joyous and special for me. :)”
