Dean Razavi - RPG Design Fundamentals
THIS IS A TICKETED EVENT. YOU MUST PURCHASE A TICKET ($25) ON EVENTBRITE IN ORDER TO ATTEND. ABOUT THE CLASS: Learn the fundamental design elements of a digital role playing game, with an emphasis on how to plan and design pre-production. Ever since their origins in pen and paper, RPGs have been gaming's primary vehicle to tell grand stories. The genre focuses on a few key elements to establish a connection between the player and their character, a bond often formed by allowing the player to shape the story or development of their hero. This class surveys narrative and quest design within the scope of RPGs, character progression, developing easy-to-learn, hard-to-master mechanics, battle, and balance. Students will also engage in discussion about certain tropes important to the genre, and how to both implement them successfully and change them to create their own unique game. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Dean Razavi is a game designer, developer and instructor in New York City. He got his start in the Warcraft II and Starcraft map editors building role playing games with the engines' trigger editors, and later in Inform, Game Maker, and RPG Maker. Since then, he has developed several RPGs, including a needlessly elaborate one for his wedding invitation. His most recent commercial release is Vidar, an exploration and puzzle-focused game that tells a randomly created story every time. Dean is currently an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Game Design at Hostos Community College, and is the Co-Chair of Play Crew, a community organization of game creators in New York City. He is a recovering lawyer, but don't hold that against him.
