NYC Writers Circle Pages

Our aim is to create a supportive and collaborative community of creative friends. We're a literary salon for writers seeking

  • Intellectual and creative stimulation in the company of other writers;
  • Contacts and resource exchange with others who are serious about writing;
  • A social outlet from the isolation inherent in writing;
  • A platform to share, contribute, and perform your work
What we are not: A writers' workshop or a critiquing group.

We're looking for intelligent, creative, cultured, and fun people, to join the writers circle of friends. TO JOIN, please introduce yourself by filling out ALL the online profile questions. Let us know a little about your writing, literary interests, AND add a recent photo of you where you are clearly recognizable. Completed profiles help us get to know you a little and they make our group feel friendlier (less anonymous). Photos help us remember you as we associate a face with a name and display our diversity.

FACEBOOK: Join the new online version of our group on Facebook NYCWC.

At EVENTS we may
    • Discuss our work and share our writing goals
    • Discuss ways to improve the art and craft of our writing;
    • Share tips on work techniques and discipline;
    • Philosophize and search for meanings that will give depth to our work;
    • Discuss books related to (our) writing;
    • Motivate and inspire others through our commitment and productivity;
    • Have member readings;
    • Invite known authors or people in publishing as guest speakers;
    • And of course, have fun as writing can be an isolating experience.

WHERE AND WHEN WE MEET: We generally meet at lounges in Manhattan. We sometimes attend literary events or local writer conferences. Please note: The day we meet varies and depends on the availability of an appropriate venue. We meet every month or every second month.

COSTS: A non-refundable $7 fee is charged to attend some events.

  • Promotion
    With hundreds of members and growing fast, our group is a powerful platform for getting our members' names in the public. Our About pages and online profiles are searched by powerful search engines which gives us more exposure. When we buy each others' work, we create an invaluable support network and expand our audience.

    As Organizer, I try to promote writers who are genuine and participating members. However, we won't tolerate: anyone using the group to spam or shamelessly promote their own interests; anyone who acts in bad faith and disregards our objectives; anyone who joins simply to self-promote; anyone who strives to disrupt the positive atmosphere we aim to create for members.

  • Member Readings or Performances
    You can let us know about your readings around town or request to read and sign books at one of our events.

  • Sharing Work
    We may have readings and follow-up with light feedback after events, if readers request it. If you would like to read for us, please read our READING POLICIES (follow link above).

  • Focus
    Our genre focus is broad and our target group is wide. People from diverse backgrounds and all levels of experience who are serious about their writing are welcome. We have published authors, professional writers, and those just starting out. Whether published or beginner, we can all learn and help each other through our commitment, exchange of ideas, and networking.

    "A really friendly, talented bunch." Peter Moore, Aussie travel writer (Guest speaker May 06 event).

    "It's all about people. It's about networking and being nice to people and not burning any bridges. Your book is going to impress, but in the end it is people that are going to hire you." Mike Davidson

    "What a great crowd, so supportive and so generous with each other. There was a really good feeling in the room." Tim Harper, journalist and publisher (Guest speaker April 06 event).

    "Jeff Greenwald was absolutely splendid - great storyteller, and an inspiring role model." Member comment on editor and travel writer visiting from California (Guest speaker Oct. 06 event).

    "Arthur Nersesian was so honest and down to earth it was a pleasure to hear him. So interesting to hear a person's real trek through the publishing forest instead of the usual corporate BS that sometimes is presented in these kinds of situation." Member comment on guest speaker, Jan. 07 event.

    "I had a wonderful time. It's always a relief to talk to writers." Jennifer Belle, best-selling novelist (Guest speaker Jun. 07 event).

    "[James Othmer] helped me think in ways I haven't had to in a while." Member comment on guest speaker, Aug. 07 event.

  • Our Wikibook: Have some fun with our communal story. NEW

    "The circle was formed of persons who were not bound together. She had taken them here and there in society, but so well assorted were they that once there they fell into harmony like the strings of an instrument touched by an able hand." Marmontel on the Salon in 18th century French culture.
