May 27 Brunch - Homage to Catalonia (George Orwell)
It's been a while since we did a non-fiction selection, and George Orwell's Homage to Catalonia has remained one of the seminal tellings of the Spanish Civil War. In this work, he provides his memories and observations fighting with the Republican Army. Reviews: "It shows us the heart of innocence that lies in revolution; also the miasma of lying that, far more than the cruelty, takes the heart out of it." - Time and Tide About the Author: Eric Blair (George Orwell) was born in India in 1903 and served with the Imperial Police in Burma before joining the Republican Army in the Spanish Civil War. He is best known for the allegorical novella Animal Farm (1945) and the dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949). His non-fiction works, including The Road to Wigan Pier (1937), documenting his experience of working class life in the north of England, and Homage to Catalonia (1938), an account of his experiences in the Spanish Civil War, are widely acclaimed, as are his essays on politics, literature, language, and culture. In 2008, The Times ranked him second on a list of "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945"

What we're about

Read a good book. Meet new and interesting people who've read it too. Feed your brain...and your stomach.

For a list of our past reads, please see the calendar or the photo album (http://www.meetup.com/NYC-brainy-readers/photos/all_photos/?photoAlbumId=316781). Our focus is on finding worthwhile literature and still covering a variety of eras, countries and fiction (and once in a while, non-fiction) genres. We try to find books that are a manageable length (200-350 pages) and that make us think.

(Our members are well-educated, but note that the majority of us do not have English/literature degrees. We are just smart people who like a good book and meeting new friends.)

We sit in smaller groups at the restaurants - usually 4-8 people per table, so that everyone can participate in a friendly, pressure-free environment and get to know the others at their table.

Helpful hints:

As we continue to grow, keeping a manageable size and a good balance of old and new members is important to us...which is why we ask you to please fill out the profile questions in order to be fairly considered for membership. (We also require current, identifiable photos for all members in order to join, and to be maintained thereafter).

Our policies are now found at the "Pages" link, and are enforced.
