CodeNow with NYC High School Students 7/1 - 8/13

Hi All,

From the been-on-my-to-do-list-forever department...

For about the last two years Jumpstart Lab has run the instructional program for a great little non-profit, CodeNow ( We all were in DC, but last winter JSL moved out to Denver and CodeNow relocated to NYC.

Since then, CodeNow has run a series of weekend "bootcamp" sessions with public high school students from all over the city. Students who successfully attended three complete weekends were invited to a six-week summer program where, thanks to a grant from the Bloomberg Philanthropies, they're *paid* to learn to program as their summer job.

That program kicks off this Monday. I'm on my way to you tomorrow to teach the first week, then most of the rest will be carried by Steve Klabnik from our team.

Generally speaking, we're starting with reinforcing the Ruby fundamentals they learned in the earlier bootcamps, then moving towards the web with Sinatra (and a little twilio integration), then getting into Rails with a content management system.

If any of you would like to get involved, we'd love to have you volunteer and help out. Being in the classroom on a recurring basis (like every Monday afternoon or three days in a row, etc) would be much more impactful to the students and fun for you -- if you're job will let you get away with that.

If you can't be there in person but want to get involved, I could use help finishing writing and testing the curriculum. We also have a few more guest speaker spots open and would love to have more women and people of color.

Or if you have other ideas, send them my way.
