Hey Leo,
Great tips! But here's my big question: If you make it all the way, does this gig pay any real money?

Good morning everyone;

     I just wanted to offer some suggestions for any of you going to the Open Casting Call for HGTV tomorrow.

     1.  As I mentioned, back in 2007 I sent a dvd audition to HGTV for Design Star and samples of my work.  To my surprise, I was called and interviewed over the phone.  Of the over 3000 applications they received, I was one of the 30 they selected to fly out to LA for the audition.  Unfortunately, I was not New York enough for them !  I did sign a contract as an alternate though.

     2.  I sent a DVD in to them the following season, but heard no response...   :(

     3.  I went to the Open Audition they had 2 years ago, so here are my thoughts.

a.  They want a "New Yorker"   Even if you were born in another country, they want a "New Yorker"

So, you can be a Mid-west-New Yorker, A Pakistani-New Yorker  ect.  They want the stereotypical New York personality - wall flowers need not apply !

     4.  Remember that you will be on TV, so your attire and samples of your work should be selected for being on tv.  They want people and work that will jump out at the viewers.

     5.  They are more interested in you and your personality than your work.  Sad but true !  So, be less "professional" and more memorable !  But have the portfolio to back it up !

     6.  The line will be long - bring some snacks and water !

     7.  The actual interview will be like "Speed dating"  You will have a few minutes to make an impression.  They will ask you the standard "job interview" questions like what do you do in yor free time.  I told them I volunteered a lot, and I could see the interviewer lose interest.  I should have told the truth - I date exotic dancers and am an amateur MMA fighter !  :)

     8.  They WILL ask why you want to be on the show - why you think you should be on the show !  Be confident !  You know your skills - tell them why you clients select you over other designers.

     9.  Most of all - be sure to be able to explain your passion for your profession.  They want you to be passionate about what you do and why you are passionate.

Good Luck !
