Portrait photography is one of the most popular and powerful genres of the photography medium. It's a way to not only record who a person is, but to tell a bit of their story in a single frame. An environmental portrait adds the element of location to help tell that story. Whether shooting a person in their home, office or random location, the environmental portrait combines portraiture with location shooting to communicate a more powerful connection between the subject and the viewer.

Through a plethora of examples, we will explore what constitutes an environmental portrait and how best to execute a shoot of this nature. Be sure to come with questions as there will be ample time to discuss individual concerns. Your instructor, Ron Jautz, has made his living photographing people in their environment for more than 30 years and will share his tips and tricks for making successful portraits.

Topics to be included will be:

• Telling a story in one frame

• Matching subjects and locations

• Natural light and/or supplemental lighting

• Working with your subject--direction, posing, expressions.

• Adding interest to your shot

• What goes in your shot, what stays out
