Alphabet City - Capturing the Essence of a Neighborhood
Brief History: Once known as Little Germany in the mid 1800s, the neighborhood saw an influx of Eastern Europeans and Jews settle in the neighborhood. By the 20th century, it was one of the most densely populated neighborhoods in Manhattan. In the 20th century, it became home to many Puerto Ricans, including the famous poet, Miguel Pinero. If you haven’t seen the film, Pinero, I highly recommend it. Today, the neighborhood remains largely Latin with pockets of gentrification. Theme: Capturing the flavor of the neighborhood. What story will you tell? Once everyone has gathered at the meetup point, we shall walk up Avenue A to Tompkins Square Park and disperse, allowing for each member to focus on crafting a story about the neighborhood. Focus not only what you see, but what you feel. Everyone will have a different perspective. This is an exercise to bring about better awareness for one’s surroundings. We will rendezvous at 5pm at Ace Bar located at 531 East 5th to discuss our stories and socialize. What to Bring: Your curiosity, imagination and sensible walking shoes. Getting There: F train to 2nd Avenue – walk east on East Houston towards Avenue A If you need to reach me, please feel free to text or phone –[masked]
