January NYT Wine School: Value Bordeaux
Asimov's February lesson is finally out and it's Bordeaux. I'm very excited about this! These are wines that speak to their terroir, with great complexity and balance. Let's pair them with the heartier winter dishes. We'll have it first right out of the bottles, then put the rest in decanters, and observe the evolution when we try them again. Please indicate in the comments section which wine you plan to bring. Please make sure to check the comments so we try to avoid duplicates. The wines recommended by Asimov are: - Château Aney Haut-Médoc 2013 (Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant, Berkeley, Calif.) $25 - Château Moulin de Tricot Haut-Médoc 2013 (Rosenthal Wine Merchant, New York) $28 - Château le Puy Emilien Francs Côte de Bordeaux 2013 (Rosenthal Wine Merchant) $42 If you cannot find them, you could select any Bordeaux in this price range. Other names to look for include Peybonhomme les Tours, Auney, Moulin Pey-Labrie, Lanessan, Jean Faux, La Peyre, Milon and Peyredon, just to name a few. What to bring: WINE As usual bring one bottle of wine from the Asimov article. As always, please note your selections in the comments section so we can keep track of which wine are still needed. Feel free to bring a bit of information about your bottle, it's producer, the region, or anything else on topic! FOOD Wine would be lonely without food, so bring a snack to share! RSVP and Waitlist: If the Meetup is full, you may opt to be placed on a waitlist. Please be aware that if a spot opens up, Meetup will automatically move you from "Waitlist" to "RSVP YES". Please keep an eye on your RSVP if you decide to join the waitlist. Cost: The cost of the Asimov Wine School meetups will vary depending on the cost of that month's wine. Generally it's been somewhere between $15-$60 for the bottle you bring plus the cost of whatever snack you select to share.

Public Group

In 2007 we started off as a wine tasting group but luckily grew and evolved to so much more. While we continue to focus on small gatherings to learn and teach each other about wine, we have sometimes branched out to have book club discussions or will cook dinner together, go see a film. All have been wine related, so far. As always, your input is encouraged.

In 2015 we shifted gears again, and started following a format based on a monthly column written Eric Asimov, wine critic for The New York Times. Coincidently, he also calls his monthly column "Wine School". He selects a region, does a little write-up, and identifies specific wines to try. After drinking the wines, people go to the newspaper's on-line comments section to have a conversation about what they've learned and liked. We've been drinking our way through his column together as a group! In this format, each participant will be expected to read Asimov's monthly wine write-up and bring one bottle of wine recommended in the article. He generally identifies three bottles, and also lists alternates if the three are not available. I find snooth.com and wine-searcher.com helpful in figuring out which wine shops might have the bottle you are looking for. Please make an effort to find the specific bottles listed by Asimov. Be sure to post a comment with which wine you will be bringing so that we can have a variety of bottles. Some bottle duplication is fine when our group is large, but we don't want all the same bottle.

The point of this group is to teach and learn from each other. All levels are welcome, though we do want participation in tasting and discussing the wines from all. We keep the group small so we can focus on the wines! Good behavior is a must, as we will be meeting in a private residence.
