ALL aboard! The reboot, a presentation of MTA's Bus Time & NYC DOT data.

Several years ago, this meetup led the effort to open up the MTA's transit data. Just a few years later, it is as if we are in a different city. Not only has the MTA embraced developers and open data, but they are actively producing real time APIs to get New Yorkers moving on subways and buses.

This reboot of the Open Transportation Meetup will build off of our initial efforts and explore the 21st century’s transportation opportunities.

We will have two presentations:

Mike Frumin, MTA, discussing the MTA’s Bus Time API. This is a real-time API to track all MTA Buses in NYC.

Neil Freeman, NYC DOT, talking about current and upcoming data sets. Feel free to ask them how to use their data, and make your requests for future data sets.

Afterward, we will have an open mic for a few brief demos. You can use this time to connect with other developers and collaborate on some great projects - we are eager to see what you create! If you want to present, please contact sarahkaufman /at/ nyu /dot/ edu.

ALL ABOARD!

Too bad i missed this. NJ Transit just rolled out a real time facility for their buses in Northern NJ for the web http://mybusnow.njtransit.com/bustime/home.jsp

and a text-only version suitable for mobile http://mybusnow.njtransit.com/bustime/wireless/html/home.jsp

So far, they don't have an API for developers, although
they have released Google Transit Feed Specification Data for several years; usually on a Friday. The terms of their licensing agreement is that any developer must update their application within 3 days of the release of new data (in other words, you have to pay someone to work over the weekend because their data is usually a mess).

In addition, for those of you interested in transportation innovations, please join us for Short Talks, Big Ideas at the NYU Rudin Center, where we'll discuss cutting-edge mapping, public involvement, transit fares, data and more; you'll have a chance to hear eight brief ideas you may not have known already, and speak one-on-one with the presenters in the post-discussion networking session. Great presentations by knowledgeable speakers. A little more time for questioning the primary speakers would've been nice, but overall a great forum to share important ideas and information.

I would like to see more image data available via an API. Examples would be images of the artwork in the system as well as construction images.

Meet, socialize and network tonight with Noel, Sarah and many others at the meetup. It is one of the most popular events in NYC today!

We built an easy-to browse/search page for/with all attendees:
