- Christmas Shells Are Ringing: a historical tasting tour
Hello Oyster Lovers, When do oysters turn green and become suspects in a murder plot? What do oysters have to do with getting kicked out of your town for 10 years? Learn the answers to these questions and more in an interactive cooking workshop that traverses the history of our most festive bivalve! On Monday, Dec 12 at 6:30 pm, we'll be meeting in the kitchen at Brooklyn Foodworks (http://www.thebrooklynfoodworks.com/) (630 Flushing Ave, Fl 2; off the G Flushing stop). I'll be demonstrating how to make oyster stuffing (with tastings, of course) and everyone will have a chance to shuck oysters. If you still haven't mastered the art of shucking, this is the perfect opportunity to learn in a low-key environment. We'll venture between celebratory oyster dishes for ancient and modern times, and you'll come away with a new appreciation for the oyster's role in luxurious living. I am premiering this class for the first time, and it will be a feast for the mind and stomach, so do sign up if you're a curious eater! The fee for this Meetup is $35 to cover materials and venue rental. In an effort to cut down on fees for all of us, I am going to run payments outside of the Meetup website, and will be individually contacting everyone who RSVPs to get online payments. If you RSVP, please include a contact email/phone for this purpose. Hope to see you there! Crystal ______________ Directions: The Pfizer building is located at 630 Flushing Avenue, a short walk from the G train at Flushing or the J/M trains at Flushing Avenue. You can enter Pfizer through the parking lot on the backside of the building at the intersection of Flushing and Tompkins Ave. After entering the building and walking past security, follow the hallway to the elevators and take the elevators to the 2nd floor. When exiting the elevators, take a left to enter Brooklyn FoodWorks.
- Oystergiving at Dorlan's Tavern & Oyster Bar
Hello Oyster Lovers, Oysters may seem like a hip trend, but we've actually been eating them for centuries in America. In fact, there are oyster shell middens along the East Coast created by Native Americans that date back thousands of years. We can't say for sure, but it's highly likely that oysters were at the first Thanksgiving dinner. It is therefore only appropriate that our next event will be at Dorlan's Tavern (http://dorlans.com/) (213 Front St), nestled in the heart of the Financial District and the oldest part of New York. Chef Billy Barlow is excited to host us, and has put together the following menu. I am particularly stoked about the roasted quail and smoked oyster stuffing! Check it out: Amuse Bouche 1 Dressed Kumamoto Oyster tobiko, scallions, rice vinegar mignonette Amuse Bouche 2 Fried Copps Island Oyster Slider potato roll, bacon, tartar sauce First Course Trio of Broiled Blue Whale Oysters garlic-herb butter, crab stuffed, Cajun style andouille and breadcrumbs Main Course Roasted Quail and Smoked Ekone Oyster Stuffing butternut squash puree, bourbon-cherry reduction Dessert Tapioca Pearl Custard The cost for this dinner is $45; including tax and tip the total is $58. As usual, prepayment is required to guarantee your seat at this event, and we have to give a headcount by Thu 11/17, so that is a hard deadline. In an effort to cut down on fees for all of us, I am going to run payments outside of the Meetup. I will be individually contacting everyone who RSVPs to get payments through Venmo, Paypal, Chase Quickpay, or Google Wallet. At the event, if you order any drinks or other menu items a la carte, please settle those with the server on your own. When owner Jeremy Dahm was asked why the neighborhood needed a good oyster bar, he replied, "Why oysters? Oysters are like no other food. They give you a wild, magical kick in the soul every time you eat them." I couldn't agree more. Hope to see you soon at Dorlan's! Crystal
