Naked in Motion is an organization that seeks to provide safe, inclusive spaces where people can exercise in the nude. NiM offers Naked! Yoga and Pilates classes in New York City to encourage body positivity and offer participants an experience of freedom unlike anything they’ve ever felt. However, it’s about so much more than just getting naked in front of strangers. It’s an immersion in a counter-cultural social movement that challenges three important aspects of the status quo: a society that tells us our naked bodies are inherently shameful; media imagery and messages that asserts that only certain kinds of bodies are beautiful; and a patriarchal culture that values whiteness, cisnormativity, and heteronormativity. Join the movement.
Your body, just as it is right now, is awesome and deserves care and love. Not the body you used to have or the one you hope to achieve, but the one you’re in right this moment. And if you are trying to change parts of your body, that’s okay too, but we think that change will happen most effectively with an attitude of self-compassion, rather than the typical self-judgement we often adopt when trying to meet “fitness goals” in this modern age of exercise fanaticism.
It is our hope that people will find our classes to be liberating experiences where they can shed their clothes, their worries about what they should look like, and the criticisms they face daily and open up their mind to the possibility of self-acceptance. We keep the lights on, literally, to encourage people to observe the body they brought with them to class, accept what they’re working with, and learn to love and appreciate it for all the ways in which it supports them.
First, you free your body.
Then you move your body.
And hopefully, maybe right away or maybe with a bit of time, you will learn to love your body.
NOTE: The RSVP's on Fetlife, Facebook & Meetup DO NOT reflect actual attendance. Most folks just come to class buying the ticket directly (link below) without bothering to RSVP online. To respect your privacy, you are not required to RSVP on any online or social platform. If you have any questions about the class, such as questions about the overall experience, gender ratio, or number of people who attend, please see our FAQ page on our website.
Please read the Naked in Motion Community Rules!
Nudity is mandatory: We’re holding a naked space, and everyone should be an active, willing participant and at least 18 years old. We make exceptions for difficulties in menstrual management and pain associated with breast size, but shyness is NOT a good excuse to wear clothing to a nudist event. Please note that having your cycle doesn’t mean you must wear bottoms, as we don’t want menstruation to limit your attendance, so feel free to wear your cup, tampon, or sponge proudly! For transgender participants: please make use of anything you require to affirm and support your gender, as we’ll defer to whatever “Naked!” means to you.
Consent (Yes means yes): Before touching anyone, please ask for their consent. Remember that anything less than an enthusiastic “yes” means “no.” This applies to all physical contact, including small touches that may seem appropriate in a clothed setting. The instructors will ask for permission before touching you during class and give you the opportunity to opt out of corrective touch. Understand that consent is an ongoing process; you can change your mind at any time, and any answer is completely acceptable. Consent is also a conversation with yourself, so know your own boundaries first so that you can communicate them to others effectively.
Anonymity: If you meet someone at an Naked in Motion event and happen to interact with them in public, please be discreet about where you met. This applies to public online forums as well. Assume that everyone that you meet at an event doesn’t want anyone to know they’re there.
Identity: Please do not presume the gender/sexual identity of those in the class, and be respectful of everyone’s identity. We want to be inclusive of all bodies, all genders, and all sexualities. Make a habit of asking for people’s preferred pronouns.
Cell Phones: Cell phones are strictly prohibited from our events while clothes are off, especially after class during social time. If you need to check your phone for any reason while anyone’s clothes are off, please put on clothes, take your bag with your phone outside, and then check the phone there (we don’t want to see it). Please turn your ringer/vibrator off during class. Stripped down? Phone down! Zero tolerance!
The Erection Question: Whether they occur randomly or are sexually inspired, erections are almost always interpreted as the latter. If you get an erection during a group exercise, just ignore it, or take Child’s Pose. If you get an erection during social times before or after a class, please don a towel or clothing for coverage.
No Cruising: We define cruising as looking for a date, a hookup, or otherwise giving off the vibe that you'd like to meet with someone outside of class. This applies to online cruising before and after events. Because this issue is so nuanced, please err on the side of caution. If someone makes a cruising complaint against you, you’ll be asked to leave and won’t be welcome again.
No Latecomers: In order to respect the safety of the space and the flow of the class, there will be strict “doors open” and “doors closed” times listed on our event pages. If you show up after the specified late entry time, you will not be allowed inside, no exceptions. Tickets are not refundable, and we make very few exceptions when allowing people to extend ticket validity to future dates.
Be Sober: Sobriety is mandatory. If you exhibit signs of visible intoxication, we will ask you to leave.
Bring a mat & towel: We strongly encourage you to bring your own mat & towel, but some of our studios have a limited number of mats available to rent for $2. If you do need to rent a mat, we ask that you bring a towel for sanitary reasons.
If you have any questions or complaints, please talk to your teacher(s). Your privacy will be respected. The instructor reserves the right to ask anyone to leave, and those who do not follow the community rules will not be welcome to future Naked in Motion classes.
