What we're about

Nanaimo Day Hikes is a club which provides opportunities (thanks to our volunteer hosts) for hiking and exploring parts of our natural and urban environment found in and around Nanaimo and the surrounding area on Vancouver Island.

We are not a technical group, but we are made up of individuals who are keen about being out of doors and willing to try many types and styles of hiking. The length of our hikes will vary ranging from 1 hour to 7-8 hours in length and the pace can also vary also with the hope of appealing to a broader range of people.

There is more to hiking than just the physical activity of hiking. With Nanaimo Day Hikes we hope it is an opportunity to explore, to experience, to create while in the company of others. To have a conversation, to share an experience, to view the world from a different perspective and to appreciate. If you wish to meet some like-minded hikers, then you might want to consider us as a route to achieve that.

Let's all enjoy the great outdoors together!

Bowen & Buttertubs walk in the Park

Wall Street

An urban park walk along Millstone River in Bowen Park. Lots of parking at Wall street & Millstream Parkway parking lot (see the pinned map). There used to be a washroom at the start/end. Not sure if the vandalism has been repaired yet. Also an outhouse at the north end of Bowen park. Then we'll circle Buttertubs Marsh for bird watching, & return partially the way we came. About 2 1/2 hours, because this is a recreational walk.
Added extra; lunch afterward.

Short Hike #2

Westwood Lake

A moderate hike from Westwood Lake parking lot to the Westwood Ridge area. We will take the biking trail Brother5 connecting to Kilpatrick the Saddle and Rusty Cable Trails, completing a loop and returning via Kilpatrick with the option of completing the lake trail or returning the way we came, No viewpoints of note, just a walk in the woods. Some climbing but not what I would consider steep.
