Camping at Cayo Costa State Park

Let's spend a weekend at Cayo Costa- an island just off Pine Island.

With nine miles of beautiful beaches and acres of pine forests, oak-palm hammocks and mangrove swamps, this barrier island park is a Gulf Coast paradise. Visitors may see manatees and pods of dolphins in the waters around the 2,426 acre park, as well as a spectacular assortment of birds. On the island, visitors can swim or snorkel in the surf, enjoy the sun and picnic in the shade. Keep your eyes peeled as you stroll along the beach, especially during the winter months. The nature trails that crisscross the island provide opportunities for hiking and off-road bicycling. Saltwater anglers can fish from their boats or throw a line out into the surf. An amphitheater provides educational programs about the island's ecology and history.

For overnight stays, the park offers primitive cabins and tent camping. A tent site is $22 per night and you may have 2 tents per site. I received the Florida Resident discount and received the second night free. Cabins are sold out. Visit http://www.floridastateparks.org/cayocosta/ for more information or to book your site. Or call (800) 326-3521. Please do so before RSVPing. I have booked site 007 if you would like to book in that general area.

Everyone will be responsible for bringing their own food although we will have a common gathering area to eat together and enjoy the campfire, games, etc. We can share grills, etc. so we don't have to bring too much stuff on the boats. More to come as we get closer!

Cayo Costa is accessible only by private boat or ferry. The ferry, Tropic Star of Pine Island, departs from Jug Creek Marina in Bokeelia and requires reservations. See below or visit http://www.tropicstarcruises.com/cayo.cfm for more information, schedule and fees.

Hi, I just made reservation for the ferry, and they charge $8/night parking, so if anybody is interested, if you add 10 min or less to your trip , you can park at my house and carpool. I'm in NW Cape. I have room for up to 10 cars.

There is a small store on the island (open during the day) that has basic camping supplies such as water, firewood, ice, snacks, etc.

Most of you have given me your campsite or cabin number. Some have not. If you have not reserved your site or cabin yet, this is a reminder to do so. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to reserve your site. There will not be any group sites reserved for NAN. At this time, all the cabins are sold out and only tent sites are available. Also, I know it is a little early but you will also need to reserve your spot on the Tropic Star ferry, if that is how you are planning to get to the island. There are boat docks for those planning on taking their own boat or jetski. All the numbers/website info is posted on the meetup site. http://www.meetup.com/Naples-activities/events/125594642/

Mary, you can just come to site #5 as it is already reserved. I am an experienced camper. Just have to get some good air mattresses. Took 2 on my last trip and both ended up having holes so had to sleep on the ground. Not fun. LOL.

Mary- you will need to reserve your own site. We did not do a group site for this trip. Two tents fit per site if you would like to get with someone and share a site.
