• Dashboard Contest Presentations - 4th Annual
Join us for a *free lunch* and watch your fellow users present their dashboards in our 4th annual Excel & Power BI Dashboard Contest. You do not need to present to come. We need people to vote, so please join us. If you want to participate in the contest, reply to this email or message Will Harvey through meetup. Don't wait, because there are limited slots. Here are the contest rules: • Use Power BI and/or Excel to create a dashboard. • Tell a story with your data. We will be looking for originality and creativity. • Submit the title of your Dashboard by Sunday Nov 11th to Will Harvey ([masked] or Meetup.com message). • Present your dashboard in Nov 13th meeting (~5-10 min). Bring your laptop. We have just about every connector, so we should be able to share your screen on the projector. • The live audience will vote and we will announce the winner. • If you win, we will share a screenshot and description of your Dashboard with our 600+ User Group email list.

  • Intro to Power Query

  • Excel & Power BI Fishbowl
Join us for a free lunch and a lively "fishbowl" discussion. The fishbowl is a facilitated discussion format that will allow us to explore a wide variety of topics. We will be collecting topics beforehand using the form here ( https://goo.gl/forms/riRBPdLeKTsSNoGs1 ), but we will also gather topics during the meeting. The topics can range from software capabilities to implementation best practices to data analysis tips and techniques. After we've gathered our topics, we will vote on the list of topics and concentrate on the top 2-3 that have gained the most interest. Each attendee will have two votes, allowing them to select the 2 topics they are most interested in. Once we've narrowed down the list, we will have 5 chairs at the front of the room where those that want to ask questions or answer a question will sit (hence, "fishbowl"). We will also have the projector available if you want to plug in your laptop to contribute to the discussion with a demo. This will be an interesting discussion, and we look forward to seeing you there!

  • DAX Pattern: One Measure In, Multiple Measures Out!
Ever get tired of dragging the same old time calculated versions of your base measures onto the pivot? Sales YTD, Sales LYTD, % Variance...you could be dragging 12 measures into “Values” just to see what you want to see by when you want to see it. And if you want to see another measure next to each of those, you’re dragging in 12 more. What a drag (cue eye roll). What can be done to ease this carpel tunnel inducing repetition? A Time Periods table! Single Time Period versions of your base measures! Drag one measure in, get 12 sliceable calculations out! We’ll look at this handy DAX pattern together – a method that mimics “scoping” in the old OLAP cubes. Speaker: Jeff Bourque, Consultant, Business Intelligence and Analytics, Think Data Insights LLC

  • Better together: Power BI and PowerApps
Join us for a free lunch and learn about creating solutions with Power BI, PowerApps, and Flow. In recent meetings we have talked about PowerApps and Flow. This talk is aimed at "connecting the dots" on how these tools work together to create solutions. Dan Evans is going take up a common business scenario. He will demonstrate how you can create a mobile app almost automatically from a SharePoint List. Next, he will create automated workflows around that list with Microsoft Flow. Finally, he will report off of the data created by the app with Power BI. He will end up with a deployed cloud solution without using developer tools. This talk should help you connect the dots to see how you can use these technologies in your organization. Dan Evans is the North America Business Analytics Practice Director for SolidQ with over 25 years’ experience in applying innovative solutions to business needs. His key focus areas are Advanced Analytics, Business Intelligence, Enterprise Performance Management and Data Strategy on the Microsoft Data Platform. Dan works heavily in promoting technology across North America through involvement through user forums (.NET, PASS, Ignite) and industry-recognized organizations (TDWI, DAMA). Dan is also a long time supporter and member of our user group. We look forward to having you, Dan!

  • Intro to Microsoft Flow
Join us for a free lunch and learn about Microsoft Flow, which is a new service from Microsoft that allows you to automate tasks (a lot of tasks!). For example, you can trigger a Flow with a Power BI Alert and send an email to anyone with the value that triggered the alert. Most Office 365 users have access to Microsoft Flow for free. Michael Hewitt is going to give us a high-level overview of Microsoft Flow and it's capabilities, and then give some simple but relevant demos to help you grasp the tool and come away with examples to help you get started. Join us and learn how you can automate things in your organization. Michael Hewitt is a long time User Group member, an expert data visualizer, a Power BI and Excel pro. He also spoke at SharePoint Saturday about implementing SharePoint Online at his company.

  • Power BI Bookmarks
Join us for a free lunch and learn about one of the best new features in Power BI: "Bookmarks". Bookmarks bring two amazing things to Power BI: 1) They make it really easy to tell data stories. Think PowerPoint presentation only with live interactive data visualizations… way better than PowerPoint. 2) Bookmarks also enable you to create new navigation experiences for people viewing your reports. Aaron Kelly is the Team Lead of Analytics and Reporting Services at Think Data Insights. He has helped a variety of clients with Power BI, and that experience has lead him to stretch Power BI to fit a variety of needs. He brings a lot of creativity to his work. Bookmarks open him up to many new creative solutions which he will share during this talk. He and his wife just gave birth to their third son (Congratulations Aaron!), so we will not judge him if he looks tired. Thanks for speaking to us, Aaron!
