The Children's Hour (1961)
Martha and Karen (MacLaine and Hepburn) are BFFs who graduate college together, and move on to share their love of teaching by opening an elite private school for girls.
After a dispute with a particularly obnoxious student, a rumor about the nature of Martha and Karen's relationship spreads like wildfire among the students and their parents, with devastating consequences for the school.
While Karen reacts to these allegations with shock, anger and disbelief, their effect on Martha appears to be considerably more complex.
This film is a haunting examination of the brute damage too often exacted by lies, ignorance, fear and self-loathing.
Both MacLaine and Hepburn are at their radiant best here.
From the 1934 Lillian Hellman play of the same name. Directed by William Wyler. Also starring James Garner, as Karen's fiancé.
