Grayson Highlands - Annual Winter Expedition
Presenting the 7th annual winter expedition to the Grayson Highlands! First dibs, as always, go to past Grayson participants (Past participants please email/text/message me to be added!) If any spots remain, RSVPs will open for others on Jan 5th at 7pm. I tried to select the weekend that worked for as many people as possible. My apologies if it doesn't work for you. Expect something around 20-25 miles for the weekend utilizing some combination of the AT and other side trails to hopefully make a loop. This always depends on trail conditions and closures. We will carpool from Nashville after work on Friday, it is a long drive (over 5 hours) to the trailhead, and we usually stop in for dinner somewhere along the route. Expect to night hike in 1-2 miles Friday night. (check those headlight batteries!) Elevations: no huge climbs (less than 1000ft) but we will be at elevation (about 4000ft) most of the weekend so the wind/temps can be quite nasty! Highlights: Exposed open terrain with long views and interesting rock formations. Very exposed to the weather so we should have challenging winter conditions! Usually the low reaches around 15 with strong winds along the ridge. Grayson Highlands also has a population of feral ponies which are fun to look for, pet, take pictures with, etc. We will probably plan on staying in the shelters, but you'd be wise to bring some kind of backup shelter in case they are full. (it is first come first served - no reservations!) This is a trip for experienced backpackers. If you've never winter camped before we'll need to discuss the trip before you go.

What we're about

Public Group

Meet others in Nashville, middle Tennessee, and beyond, interested in backpacking. At regular monthly meetings at REI we discuss trails, equipment, tents, hammocks, packs, stoves, cameras and photography, clothing, weather, wildlife, first aid, food, recipes, etc., and find fellow hikers to take trips with. Our hikes are multi-day events that require a great deal of work by hike organizers. PLEASE RSVP WITH INTEGRITY; if you can't do that, this might not be the Meetup group for you.
