What we're about

About the Group. Are you a nerd? Do you sing along to your favorite anime intro? Have you spent hours painstakingly painting an army of miniatures? Do you don foam and felt before heading off to battle dangerous monsters? Do you physically hold your breath when rolling dice while your beloved player character dangles from a cliff? Does the thrill of winning a board game after executing a carefully planned strategy send shivers down your spine? Do you love to debate plot lines and character arcs for movies, comic books, and graphic novels? Do you get a rush of adrenaline when you line up that perfect no-scope headshot? Then stand up and be counted. Stand up and be a Nerd.

We are Nerds United. We are a group that promotes everything nerdy while providing copious opportunities to connect to our fellow nerds. Though we may have different interests, we have two things in common: our love of fantasy (whether medieval, sci-fi, zombie apocalypse, or anything in-between), and a deep passion for our hobby. These two things unite us and give us a sense of identity and purpose. Whether you’re an otaku, a wargamer, a LARPer, a roleplayer, a board game geek, a comic book nerd, a film buff, or a gamer, you’ll find a place to call home at Nerds United.

By joining this group, you agree to the Nerds United code of conduct.

Rule 1: Respect your fellow Nerd. Please remember to treat all Nerds with respect. We are all equals here. Remember that the person you're talking to, whether in-person or online, is a real person with real feelings, so treat them as you'd want to be treated. Treating your fellow Nerd with respect means agreeing to disagree, tolerating different opinions, and being able to get along with your fellow Nerd during times of conflict, and encouraging one another and helping one another during times of harmony. Nerds that do not respect their fellow Nerd will be given warnings, disciplined (put on probation), or possibly banned if the offense is serious enough or if they are a repeat offender.

Rule 2: Please be considerate. Every Nerd of Nerds United should feel that this is a neutral space where they are free to pursue their hobby without engaging in controversy. Please do not discuss politics, religion, or sex in any of the group's public channels of communication (Meetup.com or Discord). I cannot outline specific examples of what content is tolerated and what is not, I simply ask that you use your best judgment and ask yourself whether or not the content is clean before posting something that teeters on the territory of politics, religion, or sex. In addition, please keep swearing to a minimum and at PG levels. As a rule of thumb, if you wouldn't say it to your neighbor in public, don't say it in chat. Any Nerd who violates these rules will be given warnings, disciplined (put on probation), or possibly banned if the offense is serious enough or if they are a repeat offender.

Rule 3: Safety is key. Threats of violence or other hostile acts against fellow members are never tolerated, and are grounds for a permanent ban and possible police action, if the event warrants it. If at any time a member feels threatened (no matter the nature of the threat) by another member, and feels they cannot resolve the matter on their own, they should approach me or a co-organizer in private and we will investigate the matter and see if a solution can be mediated. If a solution cannot be mediated, I or the co-organizer will take whatever actions necessary to remedy the situation.

Rule 4: Have fun! It's corny, but it is an important rule. Remember that, at the end of the day, this is just a silly meetup group where Nerds can do what they love most: nerding out. Don't take what others say too seriously if you don't agree with them, and don't take this group too seriously. We're all just here to make friends, socialize, and have fun.

About Me. Pleased to meet you! My name is Jason. I have been a lifelong nerd and have strong interests in RPGs and board games. I DM a weekly D&D 5e game on Roll20 and, until recently, organized a weekly board game group. While Spokane is a pleasant place to live, I have been dissatisfied by the dearth of proper meetup groups that aren’t about shamanism or dancing (you know the ones). I started this group to give nerds like me a place to meet new friends, make new experiences, and have a great time doing what we love most.

Current Needs. I have experience with RPGs and board games, so I will focus on organizing meetups for those hobbies. I am seeking individuals who have the passion to share what they love for anime, LARPing, comic books, graphic novels, films, and video games. Please PM me if you are interested in hosting a meetup! I greatly appreciate any interest!

Ideas for Additional Meetups. Some ideas I had for additional meetups are screenings of anime and movies, multiplayer game nights, LAN/co-op gaming nights, meeting at a coffee shop or comic book store to discuss comic books, organizing a LARPing event, setting up wargames, and going to conventions.
