#2 Show vs. Tell in Creative Writing (3-Class Workshop Series)

Shrewsbury Public Library

There is a difference between descriptive versus direct language. Learn how to captivate and intrigue your reader. Learn how the difference between show vs. tell can make or break a scene. Go beyond the definition and learn how to use descriptive language to capture your audience and hold their attention. Not sure what to write? No problem – that’s the job of the teacher. By the end of the workshop you’ll not only have a clear understanding about the topic but feel inspired to go back and change that scene you’ve been working on or write something new. Cost: Free We will meet in the Learning Lab on the 2nd floor of the library. Space is capped at 5 people as this is also being advertised in other locations. Maximize class size is capped at 10 to allow people to receive feedback from each other and the teacher, as well as share and workshop their writing.

#3 Grammar & Mechanics in Creative Writing (3-Class Workshop Series)

With the increase of informality in writing, who cares about grammar and mechanics when an emoji says it all? Good writing requires practice and repetition. This interactive workshop will review grammar and mechanics for creative writing. We’ll cover the following: 1. Tenses 2. Fluff Language 3. Format 4. Dialogue 5. Profanity in Writing Bring a notebook and something to write with. Don’t worry, this won’t be like your high school English class. We’ll cover areas of need and then put it into practice with a structured free write that includes feedback. By the time we’re done, you’ll have a firm grasp on the industry standards for creative writing. Cost: Free We will meet in the Learning Lab on the 2nd floor of the library. Space is capped at 5 people as this is also being advertised in other locations. Class size is 20-25 people and is interactive. You are encouraged to share but you can also sit back and enjoy the atmosphere.
