Join Us for Fun Rail Trail Bike Ride or Come & Walk the Bridge!
The Dutchess Rail Trail, which starts in Hopewell Junction, combined with the majestic Walkway Over the Hudson is a scenic trail especially during Autumn.
Meet in parking lot across from Daddy O's in Hopewell Junction, NY. Get to parking lot about 11 AM. The GPS address for the lot is 3 Turner Street, Hopewell Junction. It is about 1 1/2 hours from Connecticut.
The Rail Trail is wide, clean and well paved. Most of it is shady.
The Walkway Over the Hudson, spanning the river from Poughkeepsie to Highland, Ulster County, provides spectacular views from every direction.
It is the longest, elevated pedestrian bridge in the world and one of the key attractions in the area.
The weekend sees many pedestrians and bicyclists on the Walkway Over Hudson, so be prepared.
Bring plenty of water, an extra tire tube and snacks for the break at the bridge.
The bike ride is beautiful and overall an easy, fairly flat ride.
The round-trip distance is about 32 miles with an elevation gain of 1,036 feet. There are few road crossings, so you don't have to worry about traffic. Depending on your speed it's about two hours of riding, but you can take an elevator down to the town below the bridge and go exploring or go to Highland Hamlet a nearby town off of the trail. There you can enjoy lunch, have a drink and listen to music at Underground Cafe and Ales. Stay with the group or go off exploring on your own. On return, from ride we can meet at Daddy O's pub dinner at 5 p.m. depending on speed of riders.
Things to explore off of the trail:
Riders who are not full members of New Haven Ski must sign a waiver at the event.
