Long Trail: The Monroe Skyline (VT)

  • May 25, 2013 · 7:00 AM

**THIS IS AN ADVANCED HIKE ONLY FOR EXPERIENCED BACKPACKERS WITH ALL NECESSARY EQUIPMENT.**

This will be a 2 night, 3 day backpack over Memorial Day Weekend.  The hike will be approx. 32 miles with significant elevation.  We will cover the famed section of the Long Trail know as the Monroe Skyline.  This section is known for being extremely rugged with scrambles, long and smooth sections of granite and ladders.  It is also BEAUTIFUL.  We'll traverse 3 - 4000 ft. peaks, Mount Abraham, Mount Ellen and Camels Hump and many smaller mountains along the way.  This trip is also right on the tail end of mud season, expect muddy trails and wet rocks to add to the fun (pack gaiters).

This is a tough hike loaded with quite a bit of elevation, but includes some of the nicest views in the Vermont. Expect lots difficult scrambling on sections of the hike, some time above treeline and plenty of extended climbs.  Add a heavy backpack and this will be a tough trip.

Trip agenda:

Day 1: Lincoln Gap to Theron Dean Shelter (10.4 miles)

Day 2: Theron Dean Shelter to Montclair Glen (12.4 miles)

Day 3: Montclair Glen to Duxbury Rd. (7.8 miles)

Gear List:
Wicking clothing (no damn cotton!!)
Raingear and proper layers
Tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad
Backpacker stove and water purification method
Food - 2 breakfasts,3 lunches, 2 dinners, snacks
First aid kit and personal supplies
Headlamp
Hiking poles (helpful)
Trail map

The unexpected winter conditions and turning it into a car-camping weekend didn't keep us from having a good time!! And how often do you get to see a top-down convertible with skis sticking out the back? Winter in May, who could have predicted.

Chris, If I were to drive up with Jeff, do we have the possibility of spotting a car? Is Kathy driving in her own car?

    May 24, 2013

    • Esben

I understand if this is not acceptable and if someone feels unsafe. In that case I'll pull out.

      May 24, 2013

    • Chris D.

Wouldn't be the first time we've done it. Guess we'll give it a shot.

We're still on, at least to check things out. I seriously can't find my rain pants though, anybody have a size S/M spare?

    May 24, 2013

  • Rema

Sorry, guys don't like the cold.

The weather forecast for the weekend has taken a turn for the worse. I am not cancelling the trip but if you change your mind, please update in a timely fashion. At the moment it is calling for 100% chance of rain Saturday and 80% for Sunday. Monday is supposed to be mostly sunny. This means great views from camels hump! The temps will be chilly in the 40s for highs and not dropping much for the lows. THIS IS HYPOTHERMIA WEATHER. MAKE YOU HAVE EXTRA WARM AND DRY CLOTHING. And of course bring raingear, pants and jacket.

So I checked the Green Mountain Club's Long Trail guidebook today...sounds like there aren't tons of water sources on our route but that there are sources at/near shelters...Theron Dean Shelter's source is less reliable than others it sounds like but there's a brook just over 4 miles past Theron dean so we won't need to worry about having full supplies heading out that morning. Plus if it really does rain puddles and run off count as sources. :-) We'll be on a ridge and there aren't water crossings it doesn't seem.

Hi all, so I am joining up last minute! Melissa, my girlfriend, talked me into it! Looking forward to meeting you all getting my hike on!

Hi guys what do you think of the weather, if the rain holds up like this tomorrow? Have never pitched a tent in the rain, to say nothing of scrambling in the rain. What are you planning to do if it kept raining?

    May 23, 2013

    • Melissa Emily L.

Its going to be rainy, yes. I say.. I live in nyc and I rather be in nature in the rain than not at all! Hope you join us Rema.

I wonder where I put my rain pants....and the best part will be the mud. As long as the stream crossings (if any) are passable, we should be fine.

Okay, so because the state park campground is full and a second site is not available, i will increase the number of people my reservation for 4 people to 8, which is the max for the reserved site. That'll bump the total cost to $86, divided by 8 people it comes out $10.75 per person. :-) Before I do that, tho, could everyone confirm that they're coming and staying at the state park, not making other arrangements on their own? I want to give them as close to an accurate head count as possible for the site since they have my card info. Also, is anyone anticipating getting to Waterbury before 8pm??

    May 22, 2013

    • Rema

Esben I am with you and Dana on this

      May 23, 2013

    • Melissa Emily L.

I believe Jeff and I who are riding together were also planning on joining Esben, Dana and Rema later at the RV site. We will likely get there late- leaving brooklyn at 3:30pm. Please email us your cell numbers..

      May 23, 2013

  • Chris D.

I booked one site for $46 at little river state park for 4 people. We can probably squeeze a few more without anyone noticing. I know Rema, Alan, Esben, Dana, Kathy as confirmed. Is anyone else planning on joining? If so ,we'll get a second site.

    May 21, 2013

    • Dana

I figured it out- have the whole route on 3 letter size sheets of paper. Will have to tape together and keep inside plastic sleeve. Much better than no map :)

      May 22, 2013

    • Melissa Emily L.

Hey Dana- could you advise me on how to find that trail map or perhaps email me the one you found? I also went to REI and could not locate. Would be much appreciated!

...although I've always enjoyed the free samples at the cavity cheese factory more.

      Cabot not cavity.

Are you bringing any water at all?

    May 22, 2013

    • Chris D.

You will need to carry a days worth of water (whatever you need, 2-3 liters). We can filter/purify water in the evening.

I'm planning to drive up from Brooklyn midday Friday and would love some company. Is there any room left at the Little River sites? If not, I'll try to reserve another or find something close by.

that's okay -- see my comment -- we can fit 8 on the site i already reserved, it'll just be a touch more crowded. :-)

Melissa- I'm not going thru the city but I could pick you up at the Chappaqua train station at 6.

Hey Chris, are we spotting a car Saturday morning at the Duxbury Road trailhead @ 7am for then driving to the trailhead on Lincoln Gap road?

    May 22, 2013

  • Chris D.

Be sure to have $5 CASH for our stay at montclair glen shelter. They charge due to a caretaker on site.

    May 22, 2013

  • Esben

I'm planning on driving and would have room for 3 passengers. Leaving NYC.

    May 20, 2013

    • Chris D.

LOL! But to be honest, don't worry about offending those people. They know who they are.

      May 20, 2013

    • Melissa Emily L.

Hi Esben, I was just confirmed for the trip but would need a ride to the trail head. Do you have room in your vehicle for one more? Please contact me! [masked]

I'm looking at staying in Little River State Park Friday night (car camping). This appears to be only a few minutes from the northern trailhead. And set up the shuttle first thing in the morning Saturday.

    • Dana

Chris were you able to reserve a site at little river? Theres a 2 night minimum according to the website but they do allow up to 8 people per site.

      May 20, 2013

  • Esben

Does anyone know if there is a tent site at the Theron Dean Shelter? The reason I asking is that it's rated to 5 people and we might not be the only ones on the trail that day.

    May 20, 2013

    • Chris D.

There are almost always flat areas near the shelters to set up. If it is full, we fill up on water, and move down the trail and backcountry camp.

Kathy, Alan and myself are driving together. Post if you need a ride or can offer a ride. And if you are not coming, update your status.

Is anyone driving from the NYC/N. NJ/Lower NYS area? If so, would you have room for another passenger? I'd like to share gas and toll costs.

    May 16, 2013

Can offer you a ride from Chappaqua train station. Looking to leave from there Friday around 6 PM.

      May 16, 2013

I'm leaving from northeast Bronx around 3:00

Sorry Chris, got talked into doing the Pemi again.

    May 14, 2013

Lol. Its cool. Be forewarned, I was in the whites last week and there is still 3-5 of monorail snow at elevation.

      May 14, 2013

  • Chris D.

PLEASE READ-- This trip is fast approaching. I know it was posted a while ago and many of your plans have changed. So please update your RSVP if you are no longer coming. It is also frustrating to see a few of you are double-booked with other groups. If you don't change your status on the other site, you'll be removed from this list. Thanks Chris

Just did a beginner trip last weekend and it was great, but I realized this trip will be a bit too tough for me so I'll open up a spot for someone else and hopefully catch another trip later in the summer!

    May 9, 2013

  • Chris D.

Its common for some group gear to be shared (tent, stove, fuel, bear bag line, etc.) with people who want to share. Others in the the group will carry all their own gear, to be self-reliant and enjoy their own tent space. These things are worked out the week prior to the trip.
