Camping/Hiking at Ward Pound Ridge, Saturday August 24th.

*** Note: This event is cross-posted with The Next Adventure Meetup Group ***
*** Price to attend $5 ***

Hey folks, let's all go camping at Ward Pound Ridge in Westchester County!!!! Its Westchester's largest park at 4,300 acres, with lots of trails, streams, and gorgeous views.

The park has a few tent sites available, which allow 2 tents & up to 8 people per site. I'll keep the RSVPs open for a few days to see how many folks are interested and then make the reservations.

Folks will be expected to share the costs for food, drinks, and tolls. We also need people to bring tents, sleeping bags, food/drinks/stoves or charcoal. I have 1 tent and a stove but we would obviously need more.

Drivers, please offer rides.

To get here by car, take the Hutchinson River Parkway to Interstate 684. Get off at Rt. 35 east/Cross-River Road. Make a right onto Old Post Road and then a left onto Reservation Road after the bridge. We'll meet at the Visitor's Center down Reservation Road. If you don't find us there we should be down Pell Hill Rd. which is further down Reservation Rd.

You can take Metro-North (Harlem Line) here from Grand Central Station and get off at Katonah. Train leaves at 9:48 am and arrives 10:51 am.

Once we see how many folks are interested I'll send out my number and request it from others, and we'll discuss bringing food, tents, sleeping bags, etc etc.

RSVP as soon as possible so I can make those reservations ASAP!!

see ya soon!

edit:  here is a map of the park, so you can see what sort of hiking is possible.

Does anyone else really like their morning coffee? Is there a camp fire available.

Do you know if there are showers at the campsite? I looked at the website, but couldn't figure it out. Also, is anyone bringing a pump for an inflatable mattress?

    August 13, 2013

    • Dan J

there is a water spout at a building about 5 minutes from our camp site. I will also be buying one-gallon jugs of water that we can use as faucents to wash our faces & brush our teeth. :)

Excitied to be going! I have a two person tent and sleeping bag and pad. I don't have a backpack for hiking with lots of gear yet though. Just a daypack/camera backpack. Are we going to have a place to put everything or are we hiking with our tents, sleepingbags, etc in backpacks?

And I'll be taking Metro-North with Jessica and Zoe.

Tim-you now have a spot for camping. Will you be driving or taking Metro-North with Jessica and Zoe? Do you have a tent?

Tim. Do u have space for one?

      August 23, 2013

I can come by myself but then I'd need a ride. I have everything we'd need. My friend drives but then we'd be over capacity. Contact me

Hi Dan, I have two questions:
    1. Do I need a sleeping bed or even a tent?
    2. Will the bug situation be bad with the temp. and rain, if so it would be a bummer as no spray seemed to work for me at all...

    Thanks.

When do you think we might be returning on Sunday?

    August 19, 2013

    • Dan J

we have to leave the campsite by 11 am. Unless folks want to go for another swim or walk, which I might, we'll be getting back to Manhattan around 1-1:30.

    August 18, 2013

    • Dan J

If this one goes smoothly I may host another in September. :) Yes, you need a sleeping bag. But for my car-camping you don't need to bring too much food or water as we can buy stuff near there.

      August 18, 2013

It has been change of plans and I won't be able to make it this weekend, hopefully other people can join and enjoy. Have a great time you all.
