This is the best scrambling around and we should catch the last of the fall foliage too!
Basics for the Hike:
Difficult scrambling across boulder fields and up cliffs. About 10 miles round trip Hiking.
The rock scrambling involves climbing over, around, underneath, and in between rocks and large boulders. There are very tight spaces you will have to climb and crawl through. This event is only for intermediate, non-claustrophobic hikers that are comfortable with advanced rock scrambling. Please check out the photos below to see if this is for you.
Dogs cannot come to this event, sorry.
We will carpool to the park, which is about 90 miles/ 1:45 hours away. We will leave the city around 7 am and return around 7 pm.
Car pooling is self-organized.
(If you're on the waiting list, please don't try to get a ride.)
The meeting point is the Mohonk Preserve Visitor Center (http://www.mohonkpreserve.org/visitor-center-trailhead)
Approx Location:[masked], [masked]
The park entrance fee is $12 per person.
Members without cars should give their drivers $10 for gas and tolls.
Standard day-hiking gear: 2 liters of water/half a gallon at minimum. 3 liters are suggested. Lunch and snacks, warm layers, etc.
Special Gear Notes: Leather work gloves are suggested. We will have to squeeze through some very tight spots, so pack light and small. (Hiking poles are not suggested since they tend to stick out of packs)
Shawangunk Trails By New York-New Jersey Trail Conference Covers this hike. All hikers are expected to have maps and know how to read them. Trails and paths here are very confusing.
Weather: We can't do the scrambles in the rain, but there are lots of great hikes in the area. 60% or higher chance of thunderstorms will cancel the trip due to continuous exposed ridges.
