Update: Stoic Camp NY 2015 is currently sold out. If you would like to be put on a wait list in case more rooms open up, please message Greg. In your message, please specify whether you prefer a (significantly more expensive) single room or whether a double room would suffice and any roommate preferences.
Join Greg (founder and organizer of the NYC Stoics) and Massimo (professor of philosophy at CUNY) for an intensive introduction to the theory and practice of Stoicism at Stoic Camp NY 2015!
Over the course of 4 days and 3 nights, attendees will be guided through the philosophy of Stoicism. We will use ancient texts almost exclusively as our starting point. From there, we will discuss how the ancient philosophy of Stoicism can be updated and practiced in the modern world.
Since this is an intensive introduction, it will be suitable for complete beginners. But given the intensive nature of the retreat, people familiar with Stoicism will also get quite a bit out of it (fate permitting).
There are only 10 spots available (5 double rooms - see "details" below for the possibility of single rooms), so be sure to sign up as soon as you are able!
Registration costs are being partially defrayed courtesy of the K.D. Irani Fund of the Department of Philosophy at the City College of New York. Greg and Massimo are not receiving remuneration from the event fees; all registration funds are going to room, board, materials, and transaction fees.
Registering and paying the fee on this site covers a 3-night stay at the Stony Point Center (http://stonypointcenter.org/) in a double room (i.e. with a roommate) as well as 3 meals a day (http://stonypointcenter.org/events-retreats/dining#.VYw8QvlViko) provided by the center. It also covers some additional fees. Unfortunately, we cannot control the demographics of attendees, so if you have strong roommate preferences, we suggest registering with someone you know who you'd be comfortable rooming with. When you register, we'll ask if you have any preferences for a roommate, and will do our best to accommodate you given who registers. But unless you bring someone with you (i.e. register with a +1 or register together and select each other as roommates), we unfortunately cannot make any guarantees to meet your preferences. If you do register with someone, you'll be able to share a double together with no issue.
If you strongly prefer a single room, they may or may not be available, and we would need to make special arrangements. If this is the case, do not register on Meetup immediately, but instead message Greg ASAP and we will work with Stony Point Center and let you know if we can get a single room and what its exact cost will be. Please note that we estimate the single room to be significantly more expensive than a double room (approximately $450 for the 3 nights, again including 3 meals a day, plus additional fees). We cannot guarantee that single rooms will be available, but if you would like one, message Greg and we'll put you on a first-come, first-serve list for single rooms and check in with Stony Point and get back to you with the details.
Check-in begins at 3PM on Thursday, September 3rd, and check-out is 3PM on Sunday, September 6th.
In addition to the meetup fee, which covers room and board, we will be sending you a list of required texts, which will be free or low-cost, and which you will be responsible for obtaining. You are also responsible for your own transportation to Stony Point Center (http://stonypointcenter.org/events-retreats/getting-here#.VYw_dPlViko), which is easily accessible via public transportation from New York City plus a free shuttle pickup. However, once everybody registers, we may be able to arrange carpools or travel together. Stay tuned for details once you register.
If we're at capacity and you really want to come, contact Greg and we'll put you on a wait list in case someone cancels. And if there's extremely high demand, we may be able to add a room or two. So definitely message us if you're interested but there's no space left. In your message, please state your preference to be on a the wait list for a single or double room.
If you have any other questions or concerns, feel free to contact Greg or Massimo.
