New York Love Fest, at 49 Grove (7th Annual, Open Vodka Bar First Hour, Free)

For each of the past six years,

New York Philosophy

has hosted a free upscale social

where members spend an evening

in frank and revealing discussions about

love, dating, and... more erotic topics.

It is, unsurprisingly, our largest event of the year.

2012 is Year Seven!

Announcing our

Seventh Annual

New York Love Fest!

We are inviting members and guests to participate

in this year's event - the evening's theme is

"Modern Love"

the joys and hazards of love and sex

in our modern plugged-in culture.

Join fellow New Yorkers for

an evening of extremely *candid* and *explicit* adult conversations.

Open Bar Happy Hour!

Free vodka well drinks for the first hour!

Half-Price Specialty Cocktails All Evening!

49 Grove is well-known for its

Specialty Cocktail and Food Menu (PDF)

and they are offering all specialty cocktails

at half-price all evening for this event

note: 2500th member [now official: Mario] gets free drinks all night!

This is *not* a typical meet-and-greet open social,

this is a "Cocktails & Conversations"-styled event

with three rounds of active and challenging discussions

it will be crowded, it will be edgy, it will be fun -

we ask everyone to keep noise levels down

and participate in all discussions

A Cocktails & Conversations event combines food and drink, a casual Manhattan intellectual environment, and a social atmosphere for New Yorkers to get together, mingle, and discuss interesting topics.

Over the course of the evening, members gather in small groups for discussions. Between each discussion round, everyone socializes and has a chance to order food/drink. With a chance to join several groups throughout the event, attendees have a chance to meet many others while engaging in spirited debates in a highly social atmosphere.

"Modern dating is a bundle of extremes. We have passionate one-night-stands imaged in movies and banked-on by clubs, on the one hand. And, we have the contrived romance of data-collection and personality-engineering in online profiles and speed dating. We may have modernized, but years of bartending and overhearing gym-locker room conversations and we're still more interested in getting people to fill roles than in actually knowing each other." - Xtina

A wonderful idea to meet and mingle with a variety of people. Possibly pool the members for questions BEFORE the event to have a better idea of what people would like or need to discuss.

One of my favorite yearly NY Phi events and it didn't let me down. Met several interesting people and really enjoyed talking with relative strangers about quite intimate topics!

This was a great meetup! I thought the questions were interesting and everyone seemed to want to share their opinions. I liked switching into different groups and having the opportunity to meet more people.

Great crowd and really nice venue. A minor comment on the questions/topics for discussion. We sometimes found the wording ambiguous, or obtuse (some were thrown by "trope") or just old-fashioned. I know how hard it is to make up the "assignment" but this is the one area where the event could be improved. You could even crowd-source the questions prior to the event.

I thought the event was great. I really enjoyed myself. The topics and discussion were interesting. The variety of people that attended helped make the event fun and to provide many different points of view.

People got rude and contentious in all my groups. The concensus in all 3 groups were that the questions were poorly worded and many did not make sense so in some cases, we did not stick to the script. Part 3 offended a lot of people in my group and had more to do with personal sexual practices than modern love and the relationships between the sexes. Please understand that there are people from other cultures who were very shocked and uncomfortable discussing certain aspects of porn. One Asian girl was so embarassed and left...

I thought this was a great way to meet people, exchange ideas and get to know people. Our second faciltitator, Carmen, did an especially good job asking some of the questions posed in a way which encouraged free and open discussion of a subject about which people are generally reluctant to speak in public. I got to think, laugh and learn. What could be bad?

I found this meetup with its very intriguing subject on modern love quite enjoyable. On the 3 rounds of discussion we got to converse with many affable individuals, and partake in stimulating conversations on various interesting topics (some even risqué). The organizers did a good job with this meetup, it was organized and well planned, making it a fun event for all the participants.

This was my first meetup, and I had a great time. Lots of cool people and fun discussions. Who doesn't like to talk about sex with total strangers for hours?

Speaking for myself: photos are OK, but video is not.

@Robert: thanks for the query. The first hour is an open social (and the open bar). The first discussion round begins at 7 after brief opening remarks by the organizers. The second round is at 8 and the last round is at 9, with 10-minute breaks in between. Members are invited to stay after 10 as late as they like; the regular 49 Grove 'scene' starts at 11-11:30.
