Sexism in the Media

What is the connection, if any, between 'free will' in the philosophical sense (free will vs. determinism) and the manipulation of our deepest desires by media the the social constructs in which we are enmeshed? It is the latter that presently concerns me more as I explore what forms and drives the misogyny that seems so prevalent in our current culture.

In anticipation of the upcoming Sexism in Advertising Forum, 9/21, a few relevant videos that have good information, statistics and graphic examples:

Sexualization of Girls in the Media-- SPARK Summit [5:04]

Killing Us Softly 4: Advertising's Image of Women (Trailer) [4:57]

The Patriarchal Agenda-Media & Sexualizing Female Behaviour.wmv [5:32]

On the related topic of pornography in the media, I would like to offer my highest recommendation to the best crash course I've viewed on media manipulation of sex, race and gender (and the supporting economic underpinnings): Dr. Gail Dines' Presentation to the Feminist Antipornography Conference [1:01:59]

Caution: Strong language and graphic images. This is a very frank and explicit discussion about the pornography industry. (To view more easily in full screen, use the link above the screen to get to 'Google Videos' and click the 'expand' button, bottom right, below the screen). If you do not wish to make the investment in time, or wish to skip over the more disturbing images, at least have a listen to the last few minutes by simply advancing the cursor below the screen. Her very persuasive conclusion begins at 57:45.
