Macro Photography Workshop

  • There’s an old saying in photography that if your pictures aren’t good enough you aren’t close enough. That is why I love macro photography!

Since January is cold outside, we’ll come inside on Martin Luther King Day and make macro photos. I’ll start off showing you examples and talk about the tricks and methods I use to really get great close-up photos. We’ll talk about lighting, lenses and shooting angles. I’ll give you some things to try and warnings of what hasn’t worked for me. We’ll talk about equipment like the difference between 50mm, 100mm and 200mm macro lenses, extension tubes and how they work, macro focus rails and focus stacking.

Then I’ll have five macro studios set up in my office, complete with lighting and fun things to shoot, to give you an opportunity to shoot your own photos from many different perspectives. After a short break for lunch, which is included, we’ll spend the last two hours looking at the photos you shot. It is always fun to observe how people see the same scenes differently. You’ll come away with many ideas to try on your own!

Bring your camera, a macro lens or close focus filters and a tripod. If you don’t have a macro lens, I’ll have a Nikon and Canon macro lens you can use. I also highly recommend using a wired shutter release. If you have a polarizer for your macro, bring it too.

Location: The workshop will be at Loren’s office in downtown Somerville, NJ, just two blocks from the NJ Transit train station on the Raritan Valley Line. You’ll get full directions once you register.

Hi Loren , I have a D7200, and the new Tamron 90mm macro VC lens. What other Nikon or Nikon compatible lenses will you have to try out? Also do have any 2x teleconverters I could test out as well with the Tamron lens?
    Thank you ! Terry
