Chinese Breakfast

Chinese breakfast. Two words you never hear together. Whatever it is it's gotta be weird, exotic, unique and interesting.

Well it definitely is.

What do Chinese people eat for breakfast? Probably mostly juk (rice porridge), which ironically is the one thing you won't find on the menu, but also a variety of different pastries and protein dishes.

Petite Soochow in Cliffside Park serves a Chinese breakfast on weekend mornings. The menu selection involves a lot of pastries served hot, some proteins, and other stuff. Some examples:

Shanghai style bun - Like a steamed bun but somehow has weird striations in it ----- ----- sesame cake ---- ----- youtiao - chinese fried dough sticks which are delicious ---- ---- sweet soybean milk - nice and rich and sweet and savory nice to slurp on a cold morning ---- ---- soup buns or xiaolongbao - dumplings that have liquid soup surrounding the meatball, not very breakfasty but we'll order it anyway ---- ---- oyster pancake - a weird omelette with a couple of oysters but also a delicious red sauce and a nice chewy tapioca bottom layer ---- ---- turnip cake - the traditional dim sum favorite, nice and chewy ---- ---- sweet rice ball soup - rice dumplings filled with a sweet sesame paste in a sweet eggy soup broth ---- ---- taro cake - a mound of cooked taro with dried fruits inside and some kind of sweet white sauce

It's cheap enough, expect to pay between $15 - $30 per person depending on how much we order, and I'm only including the upper range of $30 in case a lot of people come and we order A LOT because we want to try everything. Even with just $15 per person you get a lot of food.

I am setting an RSVP limit because I plan on cross-posting this.

Parking here is lacking. The restaurant is in a small lot, and is set back from the road. There's also a ramen restaurant at this same lot. You can also park on Anderson street, and walk between the buildings down the hill and it's right there.
