NIA -- a barefoot dance workout set to great music, Nia is an innovative and dynamic fitness program with a holistic approach to physical well-being FITNESS AND FUN Nia is the most imaginative combination of fitness and fun -- without the pain or compromises! If you're looking for a rejuvenating activity, a natural way of moving, an individualized, joyful, full-body workout, meditation, stress relief. . . then try Nia! Nia blends elements of Martial Arts (Tai Kwan Do, Aikido, Tai Chi), Dance Arts (Modern, Jazz, Duncan Dance), and the Healing Arts (Yoga, Feldenkrais, Alexander Technique) with dynamically eclectic selections of music. The music and the movement make a kind of magic unique to the Nia Technique. GENTLE WHOLE-BODY FITNESS Unlike traditional aerobics, there's minimal jumping; all movement is done with a sense of ease and control, using whole-body, expressive movement, utilizing core muscles to support the movement. Dancers are encouraged to work only as hard as what feels right for their bodies and level of fitness. So dancers of diverse fitness levels can find harmony in the same class. You will sweat! BAREFOOT WORKOUT Nia is a barefoot workout, which encourages natural movement and stimulates sensation through thousands of nerve endings in the soles of the feet. It is a blend of form and freedom designed to awaken our creative impulse, while we mindfully listen to our body. It incorporates contrasting movements and moods: sometimes soulful and meditative, sometimes whimsical and childlike, or sensual, or playful, or serene, or outrageous. . . whatever the music and imagery evoke in us, whatever feels good, is The Body's Way. AWAKEN SENSATIONS A Nia class will awaken feelings and sensations throughout your entire body. The movements allow you to listen to and trust your body, to grow through self-expression, to relax into comfort and strength, and to revitalize and uplift your spirit and emotions. THE NIA TECHNIQUE~ Develops greater flexibility, agility, mobility, stability and strength~ Addresses the needs of the body, mind, emotions and spirit simultaneously~ Is adaptable, allowing participants to develop fitness based on their own needs, guided by their body's wisdom~ Follows the Pleasure Principle: if it feels good, keep doing it; if it doesn't -- stop.~ Invites playfulness and creativity into the fitness process. The studio is at 175 Birmingham St (between Islington & Kipling).  Nia classes are held Tuesday 9 a.m., Wednesday 6:30 p.m., & Saturday 10 a.m.  Classes are 75 min long.  A single class is $16.50 (reduced rate 10 class passes available).  New Rhythmic Rainbow special: 4 classes for $40 to be used in 4 weeks!  Feel free to drop in to a class anytime (there is no new session start date...)
