Celebrate the Summer Solstice

The Summer Solstice happens Tuesday June 21, 1:16 P.M. EDT this year. June 21st the longest day of the year and the beginning of summer. What happens when you have the longest day of the year? Yep, you guessed it, the shortest night. Well if you have the shortest night of the year, why not pull an all nighter (remember those before a big exam or trying to finish a project or term paper?) and create images all night? Hey it works in my mind! The weekend prior to the summer solstice is Father's Day weekend, not a good weekend for dads to be out all night Saturday. So I chose the next weekend and looking at the Sunrise and Sunset chart there will be the same amount of daylight and (more importantly) the same amount of night as on the 21st. Lets meet at 7:30pm that is one hour (+7 mins) before Sunset on the 25th. And shoot until 6:45 am on the 26th, 1 hour (+1 min) after Sunrise. I'll be working on a place to meet and an area with lots of things to shoot (DC will probably be the place) and has lots of 24 hour coffee shops! Stay tuned for more info.

NEW INFO: Lets begin the evening at the Netherlands Carillon Pavilion and shoot the sunset looking east toward Washington. We can then decide what's next and move on from there. I think we should end up shooting the sunrise somewhere on the mall with the capitol as the main subject. Any suggestion for places in DC you would like to shoot? I'm open to suggestions.

Saturday 25 June 2011 Eastern Daylight Time SUN Begin civil twilight 5:12 a.m. Sunrise 5:44 a.m. Sun transit 1:11 p.m. Sunset 8:37 p.m. End civil twilight 9:09 p.m. MOON Moonset 2:28 p.m. on preceding day Moonrise 1:29 a.m. Moon transit 8:24 a.m. Moonset 3:27 p.m. Moonrise 2:00 a.m. on following day Phase of the Moon on 25 June: waning crescent with 30% of the Moon's visible disk illuminated. Sunday 26 June 2011 Eastern Daylight Time SUN Begin civil twilight 5:12 a.m. Sunrise 5:44 a.m. Sun transit 1:11 p.m. Sunset 8:37 p.m. End civil twilight 9:10 p.m. MOON Moonset 3:27 p.m. on preceding day Moonrise 2:00 a.m. Moon transit 9:09 a.m. Moonset 4:26 p.m. Moonrise 2:35 a.m. on following day Phase of the Moon on 26 June: waning crescent with 21% of the Moon's visible disk illuminated.

Every time I go out with this group, I don’t know what to expect. The amount of knowledge, tips, and friendliness that I get from the group is simply beyond expectation. A big thank you to the organizers and the participants for making this happen. I really enjoyed the night… into the day.

Celebrate the Summer solstice was a fun filled night with lots of laugher, patience, and understanding. The longer the night went on the more fun and laughter; which went on from sunset to sunrise, with no waning of the sprits. The more advanced and professional photographers eagerly, willingly and graciously shared their knowledge, and bug spray. The leader is the pectin in the gelling of a group, and this group is gelling. Thanks, Vincent, and Andre. I give this meetup a 5 star rating

Great time!! I guess we know for next time to have specific times and places so we don't end up waiting for half the group for hours! But it was an amazing experience! Glad I got to tag along!! I think I got some great shots!! Thanks for your help everybody!

A bit disorganized, but it was fun while I lasted. Nice, friendly group of people.

Although we didn't have a set schedule, it was quite the experience and I really had a great time talking with other photographers and trying out new techniques!

See the above address for the place to meet. We will start from there and then move to DC. We will find a place in DC to park and take as few cars as necessary. You can call/text me[masked]-0486... I'm looking forward to seeing everyone there!

We have lots of good ideas for locations to shoot. When we meet at the Carillon we can decide on the next location and so on through the night. I'm looking forward to this!

Bad news - the meetup is Saturday, not today. It's a good night for shooting, though.

If anyone is interested in carpooling with me, I live in Fredericksburg and plan to stay for the whole thing. If so, my number is[masked]

How about spending some time shooting at the Pentagon 9/11 Memorial. The benches are illuminated at night and with the Pentagon or Air Force Memorial in the background it should make for a nice image. Also it's not included on most people's must see/photograph list. Info at http://www.whs.mil/memorial/
    Search Google for images.

Great! I have Sunday morning plans, but would love to come to the earlier portion!

If you want to come for only part of the evening that is fine.

    June 20, 2011

Can we join for just part of the evening... or is that frowned upon?

I'm not sure how true this is, but I've heard the lights are turned off on the White House around 11 PM if the Obamas are in residence. Perhaps we should consider shooting there early just in case this "hearsay" is correct. I might also suggest folks bring along their ND filters to shoot fountains and the waterfalls around the FDR Memorial.

How about shooting the Memorial Bridge towards the Lincoln Memorial from Arlington? Could make a nice image with some traffic on the bridge and around the Memorial.

Hi Lori, We will be driving to some of the places and walking quite a bit. We can make up car pools for places we need to drive so you should not have a problem getting around. Most of the time we will be driving to a central location and walking from there.

i am brand new to the area, don't know my way around yet. are we all going to be driving place to place?

Vincent, the DC waterfront on 7th and Maine might be a good place to shoot, it is near the Mall, and other monuments. Check out this webpage http://dc.about.com/library/maps/blmapNationalMall.htm

I have added some new information for this all night shoot. Start at the Netherlands Carillon for sunset and end on the mall for sunrise. I'm open to suggestions for places to shoot in between.

Thought we were going to shoot in DC?

    June 7, 2011

  • Rose M. V.

Ok, that sounds better, It would work for me to get there early ( 4:00 am) in the morning and stay until night fall.

I agree with Ann, I just went to the website www.wildlifesouth.com/Loctions/Virginia/BigMeadows.html, There they talk about snakes, and bears. I'm petrified of snakes, and don't want to come across a bear. However, keeping this in mind I can take a tranquilizer or two, bring a bag of snake repullent , and keep my running shoes on.

Big Meadows is nice for dusk and dawn but bring a sleeping bag and bear bells for the overnight...I like the DC idea a little better, especially since the coffee shops stay open all night and the lighting is amazing downtown

Nice idea but I'm not sure we would catch many fawns in the middle of the night.
