Night Photography in Tokyo is a community for anyone interested in taking great pictures and making new friends in Tokyo. From those just beginning with personal cameras to professionals in the industry, we get together to photograph amazing locations, talk travel, life, and share with one another about all things related to photography.
If you have ever been curious about photography, or are just interested in exploring Tokyo, feel free to join our community. Even if you're just passing through Japan!
Kagurazaka is one of the most beautiful locations in Tokyo to retain the rustic old feel of Edo-era evening districts. With winding alleyways, a storied history, wooden structures (once renowned for its numerous Geisha houses), and the enchanting Zenkoku-ji Temple, Kagurazaka is the ideal location to host a mid-summer night's matsuri.
On Saturday, the streets of Kagurazaka will be lined with beautiful cherry lanterns, visitors dressed in Yukata's (summer kimono), with many dance groups and trailing musicians creating an unforgettable atmosphere of summer awaodori. There will be many chances for spectacular photography.

In this meetup, we'll connect with the group and talk photography themes before the festival begins. Ideas and types of photography we'll share before thinking of areas on a map of Kagurazaka of interest. We'll then set out in groups to photograph with set meeting points to reconnect at different points in the evening. If you need help adjusting camera settings, please feel free to ask for assistance. There will be a lot of movement during the festival, how to capture action scenes in low light would be one of the key areas of photography at Kagurazaka.
Meetup participation fee for this event is ¥1,000, please only sign up if you're certain to be attending. We will plan a photography route in advance depending on size of the group. We will also have meeting points set on maps shared with the group.
*In the event of rain, this event will still be held. Photography in the rain creates spectacular photographs.
*Meeting point: Above ground Kagurazaka Station - Exit 1 from 5PM, Saturday, July 27th. Look for the group with cameras and a meetup sign.
After the festival, we'll find a cafe or space large enough for the group to share a few drinks and photography from the festival.
Rock the night and only sign up if you're certain to attend. See you there !
