LSE Lecture: The Rise and Decline of the American "Empire"

  • Nov 22, 2012 · 6:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

This is a lecture with Professor Geir Lundestad, Director of the Nobel Institute. His new book is The Rise and Decline of the American “Empire”: power and its limits in comparative perspective. While the United States has been the world’s leading power from 1945 into the new millennium, it is now being challenged, primarily by China. In many respects the world is without a clear leader.

The lecture starts at 6.30pm, but we will meet up at 6pm as seats are on a first come - first served basis.

Very interesting debate, I particularly appreciated the historical context. I heard another LSE lecture a few weeks back on a similar topic (Edward Luce on his book: Time to Start Thinking: America in the Age of Descent), which largely looked at economic facts, past and present. I'm pleased he also commented on Europe and the Nobel Prize.

For anyone who missed the lecture or would like to listen to it again, LSE publishes postcasts of their public lectures. It should become available soon on the website below. Enjoy!
